Recent Ike Ugbo news gives possible indication in Sheffield Wednesday pursuit of Ian Poveda - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday may now have a clearer indication over a possible summer move for Ian Poveda.

Sheffield Wednesday are keen on re-signing Leeds United loan man Ian Poveda this summer, with his contract at Elland Road set to expire next month.

The Whites were beaten 1-0 by Southampton in the Championship play-off final on Sunday and are yet to announce their retained list ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

But Poveda, 24, is widely expected to move on after four years at the club, with just 30 appearances and one assist in that time.

With Sheffield Wednesday, the Colombian international grabbed one assist in 10 Championship appearances but wowed fans with his performances.

The Owls won six of the eight games that Poveda started in. His season was cut short by injury though, and other clubs including Burnley, Luton Town, and Sunderland are also interested.

Sheffield Wednesday are also keen to re-sign Ike Ugbo this summer, but reports say that Danny Rohl must wait until after Copa America this summer, with Ugbo in the Canada squad.

Ike Ugbo update gives Sheffield Wednesday clear Ian Poveda indication

Ugbo has worked his way back into the Canada team after his impressive loan stint with Sheffield Wednesday, in which he scored seven goals in 18 league appearances after joining from Troyes in January.

Poveda though hasn’t been selected for the Colombia squad for the upcoming Copa America, which runs from June 20th to July 14th.

The former Manchester City youngster has two caps for Colombia with both of them coming in 2023.

After a mixed season back in the Championship with Leeds United, Poveda misses out on international selection with Copa America, despite his impressive stint in S6.

Sheffield Wednesday waiting on one other thing

Whilst Poveda’s absence from this summer’s Copa America allows Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday to swoop for Poveda sooner than they can for Ugbo, the Owls are still waiting on one other thing.

Leeds United are yet to announce their retained list. But per the BBC: “All EFL clubs must send their retained lists to the EFL by the third Saturday in May – which falls on the 18th of the month.”

So Leeds and Daniel Farke will have already made a decision on Poveda, though it’s yet to be made public.

Earlier in the year, it was claimed that Poveda would be leaving Leeds United as a free agent this summer, so for Sheffield Wednesday, it may be a case of waiting for the London-born winger to officially become a free agent.

Despite his injuries, Poveda returning to the club would be a massive boost for Rohl who was getting the most out of him, and for the fans too who really warmed to Poveda in the second half of the season.
