Imagine him & Goode: Sheffield Wednesday should swoop for 'fantastic' gem who made debut at 17 - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday should look to the Premier League for another defender if they snap Charlie Goode.

Sheffield Wednesday are looking to bolster their defence after conceding the sixth-most goals in the Championship last season.

The Owls did see the likes of Michael Ihiekwe and Liam Palmer really step it up in the second half of the campaign, but their ageing backline is in need of a revamp if they are to achieve a top half finish.

Wednesday have already beenlinked with former Brentford defender Charlie Goode, who is available on a free transfer after managing only 20 appearances in four years.

The 28-year-old has bags of experience across the English football pyramid and could strengthen the Owls’ defence for next season.

However, with one of the oldest squads in the Championship, Danny Rohl needs to start looking at youth to build a well-rounded team.

Sheffield Wednesday need more youth in their squad

Di’Shon Bernard was added as one of the younger players from Manchester United last summer and has proved a real hit, so Wednesday should look back to one of the Premier League giants to bring in another ‘fantastic’ star.

Callum Doyle has proven to be a huge success in the EFL since he first made his debut on loan at Sunderland at only 17 years old.

The centre-back has enjoyed loan spells from Man City with Sunderland, Coventry City and Leicester, achieving two promotions and also reaching the Championship play-offs with Mark Robins’ side.

He has racked up 113 senior appearances at only 20 years old and has also risen up through the international ranks too, winning the Under-19 Euros in 2022 before making his U21 debut in September.

Doyle was a key member of Leicester’s squad until suffering a knee injury in October, before struggling to retain a regular place in the starting line-up upon his return.

It was reported in January that the Foxes wereeager to snap him up permanently, with his versatility as a left-back coming in handy for Enzo Maresca.

However, his lengthy injury, Leicester’s promotion and Maresca’s impending exit could make a return to the King Power Stadium unlikely.

Man City could look to send Callum Doyle back out on loan

While impressing at the top of the Championship, Doyle is still miles off making the Man City squad and could instead look for another loan move away.

While the youngster has so far only made steps upwards, his stop-start, injury-stricken campaign at Leicester could have dented his hopes of Premier League football.

It may be an ambitious move, but if Sheffield Wednesday were able to add the 20-year-old to their backline then their chances of climbing up the table could greatly improve.

Every player in the Championship is surely aware of the potential and the excitement that Danny Rohl has brought to Hillsborough, making them a much more intriguing club to join.

Bringing in players that hold the quality of Doyle could even push them for a place in the play-offs, and that is the kind of ambition that the Owls should now be targeting.

There will undoubtedly be plenty of interest in the defender, but Wednesday would be silly not to throw their name in the hat.
