Belgium boss Domenico Tedesco speaks out on Euro 2024 call up for Forest star Matz Sels

Domenico Tedesco has spoken to the media in Belgium after naming Nottingham Forest star Matz Sels in his squad for Euro 2024.

Thibaut Courtois is typically the Belgian number one but recently he ruled himself out of the tournament through injury.

Sels signed for Forest in January and helped the team stave off the threat of relegation with a number of fine performances.

It’s no surprise to see him called up for Belgium and he was nominated for Save of the Season for a solid stop against Liverpool in March.

Sels only cost Forest around £5 million and already he looks like the type of player who could retain his number-one spot next season.

For now, his attentions will switch from life at the City Ground to the European Championships in Germany.

Belgium boss Tedesco has given a press conference this week and he was quizzed on his goalkeepers – offering an intriguing answer when asked who’d be number one.

What Domenico Tedesco has said about Matz Sels being the number one at Euro 2024

It would appear that the boss who will be hoping to guide Belgium to glory is yet to make his mind up.

Sels has been called up alongside Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski and Wolfsburg stopper Koen Casteels.

The 32-year-old might be the favourite for the number one spot given that he played in the friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and England in March.

It would appear that Tedesco hasn’t made his mind up though and he wants to speak to the trio first.

He told Walfoot: “It’s better to have a clear hierarchy among goalkeepers but I’m not going to talk about that today.

“I will chat to them first. But I’m not stressing, I know we have three very good goalkeepers.”

Sels will be desperate for number one spot at Euro 2024

The Forest stopper Sels has made nine appearances for his country but never has he made one at a major tournament.

Now, given his age, Sels might view this as his last chance to get a starting berth at the European Championship.

His Forest form should have put him in good shape and in our view, he wouldn’t let anyone down if he got the nod.

Sels has been a very smart addition to the Forest ranks and he perhaps deserves the spot over Kaminski and Casteels.

Hopefully, Sels can maintain his confidence levels by getting the nod in Germany and then return to Forest fit and ready to go again next season.
