'What really got me...': Chris Powell hails 'unreal' Sheffield Wednesday fans and recalls specific game

Sheffield Wednesday assistant coach Chris Powell has discussed the 2023/24 season, and the game that ‘really’ got to him.

Chris Powell has become a beloved name among Sheffield Wednesday fans, following his arrival as assistant coach at the same time that Danny Rohl arrived.

Dejphon Chansiri reportedly wanted a native English-speaker with experience of the English game to come in and help Rohl settle.

And it worked; although much of the credit goes to Rohl and the Sheffield Wednesday players, the arrivals of coaches like Powell, Henrik Pedersen, Sascha Lense, Sal Bibbo and more, undeniably helped the Owls beat the drop.

Powell has since spoken out on the 2023/24 season on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast with Sam Allardyce.

Chris Powell recalls ‘unreal’ support at Plymouth 3-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Discussing the Sheffield Wednesday fans, Powell said: “The support, I think, is unreal. I’ve bought into it.

“The fans know, I’ve really enjoyed myself… It just got under my skin. I just adore how they supported the club.

“What really got me; our second game in, we played Plymouth away. Plymouth’s far from everywhere, and we were sold out.

“Two-and-a-half thousand. Wednesday night. Hadn’t won a game. Singing the whole game. We lost 3-0, and I remember walking off thinking, ‘if we can just slightly get this right, what are they going to be like?'”

The Plymouth defeat was Rohl’s second in charge. The Owls then won the next game 2-0 at home to Rotherham United, earning their first win of the season.

One constant at Sheffield Wednesday

No matter how bad matters have been on or off the pitch at Sheffield Wednesday, fans have always remained loyal.

Powell picks out a very good example; a 10-and-a-half hour round trip to Plymouth on a Wednesday night, no wins all season, yet the Owls faithful sold out their away end.

Rohl and Powell then rewarded fans with their first win of the season at Rotherham, with many then starting to believe that Sheffield Wednesday could beat the drop.

That feels like a long time ago now. There’s been a lot of emotions since and a lot has changed. But Rohl has since signed a new deal and Powell now looks set to stay too.

Things are certainly looking up for Sheffield Wednesday but there remains a lot of work to do in the transfer market this summer, and behind the scenes too.

The Owls are working hard in the transfer market with several names now being linked, including the likes of Charlie Goode, Karamoko Dembele, Ovie Ejaria and more.
