Movie star wears a glove on his left hand after scary crash where car flipped 3 times

Doctors told Morgan Freeman that his hand would make a full recovery in time, though the feeling never returned after an accident.

While you may have seen him strutting down red carpets or rousing World Cup crowds without ever realizing – Morgan Freeman has actually been adorning a glove on his left hand for more than a decade, after he paralyzed it back in 2008. Though the actor, who turns 87 today, has continued to work in spite of his injury, the Hollywood icon has spoken about how his ailment affects him on a daily basis in the past.

A lot of people first clocked that Freeman wore a glove on his left hand when he presented an award at the 2023 Oscars ceremony, where he stood alongside Margot Robbie, sporting silk covering over the affected area.

Freeman was in a car crash in Mississippi back in 2008, during which his vehicle flipped multiple times – in what could have been a fatal incident for the celebrated big-screen star.

Reports from the time indicate that the then-71-year-old had to be removed from the car using hydraulic cutters, before airlifting the veteran actor to a hospital in Memphis, 90 miles from the scene of the incident. In true Morgan spirit, an observer noted that he was “talking, joking with some of the rescue workers” during the excavation process.

The glove helps Morgan cope with the nerve damage he suffered at the time, as it compresses the hand and allows blood to flow.

‘It hasn’t gotten better’

While medical professionals told Morgan they expected his hand to recover with time, in an interview in 2010 the Shawshank Redemption star noted this hadn’t been the case.

“I suffered nerve damage, and it hasn’t gotten better,” Morgan explained. “I can’t move it.”

Freeman went on to say: “If you don’t move your hand, it will swell up. Do you know you move your hand about a million times a day?”

Thankfully, Freeman has continued to work beyond the incident. Now nearing his 90s, Morgan has starred in the likes of Now You See Me, The Dark Knight Rises and Olympus Has Fallen in the years since the incident – highlighting just how worse off the movie industry would have been if he had been unable to continue after the crash.
