Rio Ferdinand shares what he really thinks about Chelsea's Ian Maatsen after Champions League final clanger

Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen will not want to watch Saturday’s Champions League final back.

Borussia Dortmund, where Ian Maatsen is currently at on loan, lost 2-0 to Real Madrid at Wembley.

It was truly a game to forget for the defender, who played a huge part in the second goal Edin Terzic side’s conceded.

A misplaced pass saw Vinicius Junior eventually presented with an opportunity in front of goal, which the Brazilian did not waste.

Despite that huge error, Dortmund are still likely to try and keep hold of Maatsen. Fabrizio Romano claimed earlier this week that the German club would make a bid for the left-back after the Champions League final.

Rio Ferdinand on Ian Maatsen mistake

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand felt for Maatsen after his costly error against Real Madrid.

He thought it was unfortunate and that the Dutchman has been brilliant since joining Dortmund.

Speaking about Maatsen on TNT Sports (01/06/2024 at 22:33), Ferdinand said: “It is unfortunate for the young left-back from Chelsea, Maatsen, because I thought he was brilliant in this campaign.

“One little moment of lack of concentration and he gets absolutely punished.”

Is Ian Maatsen good enough to play for Chelsea?

Maatsen has just played in a Champions League final after helping Dortmund get there.

And Ferdinand is correct, the Netherlands U21 international has had a good season, or at least half a good one, after moving to Signal Iduna Park in January.

For example, in Dortmund’s last Bundesliga game of the campaign against Darmstadt, Maatsen scored a goal and made three tackles, the most in his team (WhoScored).

Granted, there are much stronger sides in the Premier League than Darmstadt. But Maatsen has done enough overall to show that he can offer Chelsea something. It would be a surprise, though, if he got another chance to show that.

After his successful loan spell at Dortmund and with Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell both still at Chelsea, Maatsen will probably be sold this summer.
