‘Very high on their list’: £55m player is among Arsenal’s top striker targets this summer - journalist

Arsenal appear to be stepping up their search for a new striker ahead of the summer transfer window.

Mikel Arteta was tipped to bring in a new forward in January but a move failed to materialise.

Kai Havertz has since stepped up while leading the line, with Arsenal missing out on the Premier League title to Manchester City by just two points.

Despite the German forward netting 14 times last season, the Gunners continue to be linked with a move for a new No9.

Now, journalist Ben Jacobs has shared the latest on Arsenal’s interest in RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Benjamin Sesko ‘very high’ on Arsenal’s shortlist

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jacobs claimed that Sesko features high on Arsenal’s list of striker targets.

“I think Benjamin Sesko ranks very high on Arsenal’s list of strikers,” the journalist said. “There were several names that had been discussed internally and now we’re at the stage where teams have to decide.

“The decision will also be based, in many ways, on the merry-go-round of movement, because last summer was all about midfielders moving, like Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo, while this summer is going to be about strikers.

“Almost every striker has two or three other clubs invested in them. So not every club is going to get their top striker, and then there will be a knock-on effect.”

Sesko and Kai Havertz’s 2023/34 stats compared

Arsenal face a key decision this summer as they bid to improve Arteta’s squad.

Many expected a move for a striker to be a no-brainer this summer but Havertz’s form has come as a surprise.

The former Chelsea star provided them with a real focal point up front and his record in front of goal since the turn of the year has been exceptional.

Sesko would do a similar job to Havertz in that sense but would also provide more pace through the middle.

The £55 million man bagged 18 times for Leipzig last season but managed fewer assists than Havertz.

Sesko

  • 42 appearances
  • 2,055 minutes played
  • 18 goals
  • 2 assists
  • 114 minutes per goal

Havertz

  • 51 appearances
  • 3,826 minutes played
  • 14 goals
  • 7 assists
  • 273 minutes per goal
