Wolves may risk another Pedro Goncalves situation following claim about £3m player - opinion

Wolves fans not happy at the moment following the decision to hike season ticket prices – and now the club are reportedly considering cashing in on a player with big potential.

The mood around the club at the moment isn’t good because of the situation with the ticket prices, with many now cancelling, either because they can no longer afford it or out of principle.

Decision-makers at Molineux are now risking angering fans even more, with a report claiming that one of the club’s brightest sparks from the 2021/22 season could be sold this summer.

It was claimed over the weekend that Chiquinho, who has been out on loan with Farmalicao for 2023/24, could potentially be offloaded, with Sporting CP showing interest.

Simply put, the club should not be entertaining this…

Why Wolves could really regret selling gem Chiquinho this summer

Chiquinho was actually supposed to spend the season with Stoke City, but an early fallout with manager Alex Neil saw Wolves facilitate a fresh move to Farmalicao in that same window.

2023/24 was all about Chiquinho getting minutes under his belt again, after he suffered an horrendous knee injury in the summer of 2022.

And he did just that, making 31 appearances and playing just shy of 2000 minutes.

And Chiquinho caught the eye over in Portugal, scoring five goals and making four assists. One of those goals was an absolutely stunning acrobatic effort against GD Chaves.

As per WhoScored, he picked up five Man of the Match awards – no Farmalicao player picked up more.

Wolves should not be entertaining interest in Chiquinho, because we all saw how exhilarating he was towards the end of the 2021/22 season just after he signed for the club.

Wolves were pathetic in those final months. But Chiquinho was a shining light and regularly stood out – his performance against Chelsea where he got two assists was brilliant. He was also easily Wolves’ best player against Manchester City when Wolves lost 5-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

He is the kind of player Wolves need. Chiquinho is quick, direct and unpredictable. It’s very possible Pedro Neto could be going this summer and directness is a big part of the Portuguese winger’s game. that would need replacing and Chiquinho has it in his arsenal.

Wolves don’t want another Pedro Goncalves repeat

Ultimately, Wolves don’t want to have regrets about selling a player to Sporting again.

Fans have seen how Pedro Goncalves, a player who was highly rated in the Wolves academy, was allowed to depart before he had been given a proper chance.

To date, he has scored 76 goals and made 51 assists in 176 appearances for Sporting since joining them in 2020, helping the club to win two league titles. He was also the top scorer in the Primeira Liga in the 2020/21 season. Sporting are a great team, and Chiqunho could very well explode just like Goncalves if he’s allowed to go there.

On the face of it, Chiquinho is a Gary O’Neil kind of player. The manager likes mobility, and one can only imagine how Chiquinho would develop under him, given the impact he’s already had on many other players – especially the forwards.

It would be too hasty of Wolves to sell a top prospect like Chiquinho, who was shown that he has put his injury hell firmly behind him and is ready to kick on.
