'Unbelievable': Pundit claims £87m Liverpool target actually reminds him of Phil Foden after this season

Mark Schwarzer has suggested that one Liverpool transfer target has actually started to remind him of Phil Foden after his ‘unbelievable’ campaign this past year.

Liverpool will be hoping to make the signings this summer which take them closer to the top two in the Premier League after coming up just a little short in Jurgen Klopp’s final year.

Unfortunately for the Reds, it appears that a move for one player on their radar may have to be delayed until next year.

TBR Football reported that Liverpool were one of the sides planning a summer bid for Florian Wirtz after his outstanding year with Bayer Leverkusen.

Liverpool target compared to Phil Foden

Wirtz scored 18 goals and contributed 20 assists for Xabi Alonso’s side as they so nearly clinched a remarkable Treble, going unbeaten in domestic games this year.

Unfortunately for the Reds, TBR understands that Wirtz is planning to stay with Leverkusen this summer. But given his potential, you would not be surprised if most of Europe’s heavyweights kept him on their radar.

And speaking on The Optus Sport Football Podcast, Mark Schwarzer has suggested that he has seen similarities between Wirtz and the best player in the Premier League this past season.

“He’s been in unbelievable form this season, he scored 11 goals and 11 assists for Leverkusen, just in the Bundesliga this season. He scored his first goal for Germany against France after about six seconds, seven seconds,” he said.

“I don’t really want to compare him straight away, but he kind of reminds me of a Phil Foden, the type of player he is, dynamic, in terms of movement off the ball, on the ball, with the ball at his feet he’s elegant. He’s got a bit of that to him.”

Reds now eyeing West Ham star after Florian Wirtz setback

It may have been a real disappointment for the Reds when the £87 million-rated Wirtz reportedly decided that he would be staying in Germany this year – but they appear to have wasted little time in switching their attention elsewhere.

The good news for Arne Slot is that Liverpool have so much depth in the final third, so whoever they target should be able to fit into what he wants.

Wirtz is someone who can play virtually anywhere across the forward line.

Liverpool also have their eye on Mohammed Kudus, who is potentially even more versatile given his ability to play as a central midfielder as well as an attacker.

Kudus showed so many glimpses of his quality for West Ham this past year, proving to be one of the real positives in what was a difficult campaign at the London Stadium.

The Hammers are surely not going to let him go without a fight, but he would be an exciting addition for Liverpool if they could make a move off the back of Wirtz’s decision to stay where he is.
