Report: Wolves make contact to sign 'unpredictable' former teammate of Joao Gomes, offer being prepared

Wolves are reportedly interested in signing Joao Gomes’ former teammate, with the club making contact with Flamengo.

It’s a big summer for Wolves as they seek to strengthen ahead of 2024/25. After finishing 14th in the Premier League last season, the goal is to improve on that and Gary O’Neil will be optimistic about his side’s prospects.

He will need backing though. What kind of level he gets from Fosun remains to be seen.

There will be more player sales, but an exodus like last year is not expected this time around.

Wolves fans are keen to see who will be joining the club and on Sunday night, there was some speculation about a new player potentially coming to Molineux – and it’s someone Joao Gomes knows well…

In January 2023, Wolves struck gold with the signing of Joao Gomes from Flamengo.

At one point it looked as though Lyon were going to hijack the deal after they offered more money than Wolves. But Gomes’ stance was clear; he wanted to come to Molineux, and the move came to fruition.

The Gomes signing has been a resounding success so far, and Wolves are looking to go down a similar route and add gems to their squad for modest fees, with the goal of developing them and selling them on for a huge profit.

According to Bolavip, Wolves are set to raid the South American market again, and have actually identified Gomes’ former teammate Victor Hugo.

Interestingly, Wolves are said to have actually lodged an offer for the player last year, worth around £17 million.

Wanderers are said to be set to return with another offer in the coming days, worth between £13.6 million and £15.3 million. Wolves would also be willing to agree to a sell-on clause, worth 15 to 20%.

Despite losing prominence at Flamengo in 2024, Hugo – who has still made over 100 first-team appearances for the club – is a player Wolves believe has big potential and could really increase his market value.

Hugo could be another gem like Gomes

Wolves returning to the South American market is no surprise given how good Gomes has been since his arrival at Molineux.

Clearly, the club are looking to replicate that success and now have eyes of Gomes’ former teammate Victor Hugo. It is a big claim that an offer was made last year, which perhaps indicates there is a strong interest.

Perhaps given Wolves and Flamengo did business over Gomes will help with any negotiations over Hugo.

According to Football Talent Scout, Hugo is ‘very strong in 1v1 situations, unpredictable, and very confident of his skills’. The attacking midfielder is also a ‘creative player with very good technical ability, 1vs1 short-dribbling skills, close ball control, fast direction shifts in possession, and vision to make through passes to the teammates providing dynamism to the team’s last offensive third plays’.

Given Gomes is at Molineux, perhaps this will be a lure for Hugo, especially seeing how well his former teammate has done since joining.
