Report: 17 G/A gem Wolves were 'seriously interested' in will now join UCL club for £12.7m next week

A player linked with Wolves recently appears to be on the verge of completing a move to a Champions League club for a relatively modest fee.

Wanderers fans are optimistic about the next couple of months, having seen the team showing good potential under Gary O’Neil in 2023/24.

Ultimately, Wolves finished 14th in the Premier League table. But the club were unlucky in the end, and the small squad really made life difficult.

O’Neil wants to pack out his squad a bit more heading into 2024/25, and a player who has been linked with a move to Wolves in recent weeks is Rodrigo Gomes.

The youngster had a very good loan season at Estoril, but it looks as though Wolves’ hopes of signing the player are already all but over…

This summer, Wolves need to sign wide players.

O’Neil only had three to call on last season, and it may well be that Pedro Neto and/or Pablo Sarabia leave this summer. Loan players Daniel Podence and Goncalo Guedes are also likely to be sold.

Gomes has been mentioned as a possible target for Wolves.

It was reported in March that the club were keeping tabs on the forward – whose parent club in SC Braga.

But it looks like Gomes could very well be heading elsewhere, because Portuguese outlet O Jogo have reported that the talented 20-year-old is currently in advanced talks to join Atletico Madrid.

The publication suggest a deal is close, with the player on the verge of sealing a transfer worth £12.7 million. He will supposedly sign for the Spanish giants ‘next week’.

Wolves are actually mentioned by O Jogo as a club that were ‘seriously interested’ in Gomes.

But it is Atleti who have won the race, and Gomes can now look forward to playing Champions League football next season.

Blow for Wolves

This is frustrating because Gomes is an exciting young talent who some felt could possibly be another Pedro Neto at Molineux.

Gomes scored nine goals and made eight assists in 34 appearances in 2023/24 playing mostly as a right wing-back and seemingly Wolves were quite keen to land him.

But Atletico are now set to sign him and perhaps the lure of Champions League football was always going to put them in the driving seat.

It is a shame, because Gomes could have been great under O’Neil. He is a player with ‘blistering pace’ and Wolves fans know full well that O’Neil likes speedy attackers.
