O’Neil’s top transfer wish could come true if Wolves revisit ‘incredible’ £17m target this summer - opinion

Wolves could be tempted to revisit one of their former targets amid speculation over the player’s future.

Gary O’Neil will be eager to welcome several new faces to Molineux this summer, as Wolves bid to strengthen their squad ahead of next season.

The Old Gold have already been linked with a host of talent ahead of the transfer window, with the manager making his stance clear on wanting to strengthen his attack.

Jeff Shi hinted that Wolves would sign a striker in the summer and now, O’Neil’s transfer wish could be granted if the club revisit a former target.

Wolves should revisit former transfer target Georges Mikautadze

Last summer, Wolves were interested in Georges Mikautadze after his remarkable 2022/23 campaign with FC Metz.

At the time, the striker was said to have an asking price around the £17m mark, making him an affordable option for O’Neil to perhaps revisit this summer.

Now could be the ideal time for Wolves to reconsider the 23-year-old, who last night learned he will be playing in France’s second tier next after FC Metz failed to secure survival against Saint-Etienne.

Mikautadze has seen his future speculated, with journalist Santi Aouna noting that the striker’s future will take centre stage this summer.

It’s suggested that Monaco and Olympic Lyonnais are eyeing the forward, however, Wolves should consider testing the water for the seasoned goalscorer.

Mikautadze could answer Gary O’Neil’s transfer wish

If a goalscorer is what O’Neil wants, then Mikautadze could undoubtedly be his man.

The talisman captured Wolves’ eye last summer after his 2022/23 season ended having secured 33 goal contributions for Metz, via Transfermarkt, which led to him being signed by Ajax.

Things didn’t work for the Georgian in the Netherlands, as he returned to Metz on an initial loan deal in January, which has now been made permanent in France.

That being said, it’s expected that Metz will cash in on the striker for profit, as per L’Equipe, something that must alert Wolves.

On his return to Metz for the second half of 2023/24, Mikautadze contributed to 18 goals in only 22 appearances, demonstrating his prominence in front of goal.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig once lauded Mikautadze as ‘incredible’ for his goalscoring form, which O’Neil should take note of.

Wolves are on the hunt for a number nine capable of adding a presence in the box, which the 23-year-old Ligue 1 ace could offer based on his record in France.

Of course, the step from the first and second tier of French football to the Premier League is quite the climb however, at £17m, the Georgia international could be a risk worth taking at Molineux.

Seasoned goalscorers are hard to come by and after letting Viktor Gyokeres slip last summer, the Old Gold will be eager to not let history repeat itself when it comes to strikers linked to the club.
