Report: Newcastle United have just made a £35m bid for player who Eddie Howe really likes

Newcastle United are hoping to complete one signing this week, but they might be taking major steps towards another as well.

After missing out on Tosin Adarabioyo to Chelsea, the Magpies are stepping up their efforts to bring Lloyd Kelly to St James’ Park. It looks very likely that he will be joining Eddie Howe’s side this summer, with his Bournemouth contract due to expire.

His potential arrival will partially solve our centre-back issues, but another position that Newcastle United need to address is goalkeeper.

It has been confirmed that Loris Karius will be leaving the club this summer when his contract expires, and he could be followed by Martin Dubravka. The 35-year-old could be sold, as he prepares to head into the final year of his Toon deal.

Therefore, Newcastle will need to bring in at least one goalkeeper, and the club are looking for someone who can challenge Nick Pope and possibly become their number one.

Newcastle launch bid for Giorgi Mamardashvili

There have been two leading candidates – Aaron Ramsdale and Giorgi Mamardashvili. The former has felt more likely, while the latter would probably be a more popular recruit.

And it is the latter who Newcastle United may have made a move for according to reports in Spain.

According journalist Pedro Morata, the Magpies have made a bid worth £35million for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Morata, as quoted by Spanish radio station COPE, adds that Valencia owner Peter Lim is yet to make a decision over whether to accept or reject the offer.

Newcastle would break their record if they pull this deal off

If Newcastle really have made an offer worth that much then they might be in luck. That is the type of figure that the La Liga side have been looking for, with the Georgia international expected to leave the Mestalla this summer.

He is a player who has been linked with Newcastle for a long time, and someone who Eddie Howe really likes.

Now a bid has reportedly been made, and it would be enough to make him the most expensive goalkeeper in Newcastle United’s history. That honour currently belongs to Pope, who cost £10million two years ago.

Getting Mamardashvili for more than three times that amount would be quite the statement of intent, as he is a goalkeeper with a lot of potential. And at just 23-years-old, could be the Magpies’ first choice stopper for at least the next decade.

It would be quite the investment, and there will be real excitement if he does arrive at St James’ Park.
