Erik ten Hag must keep 6'1 academy ace as his focus next season, Mainoo & Garnacho-esque potential - opinion

Manchester United and, in fairness to him, Erik ten Hag have put a huge emphasis on trusting in youth over the past two seasons.

First off, it was Alejandro Garnacho who emerged. Ten Hag trusted to give the FA Youth Cup final-winning wonderkid his first real run of games in a United shirt, and he did not disappoint. His second season in particular was superb.

Then, of course, you have Kobbie Mainoo, who has arguably one-upped the Argentine. His career has simply exploded since coming into the first-team squad from injury this season, which now means he could very well be starting under Gareth Southgate at Euro 2024.

Alongside these two, you’ve also had Willy Kambwala, and most recently, Ethan Wheatley – who we believe the primary focus should be on next season.

Ethan Wheatley needs to be fully integrated into Manchester United’s first team next season

What’s that Sir Alex Ferguson saying that has rung true for generations at Manchester United? If you’re good enough, you’re old enough. Well – that’s exactly the reason Wheatley should be the next academy graduate to be fast-tracked to the United first team.

With Manchester United struggling in front of goals this season, the Manchester United manager was desperate for a wildcard up top, and 6’1 Wheatley could have been just that.

Granted, he is still extremely young, and to lead the line at Old Trafford is a monumental, weight-bearing task – but just look at his return at academy level.

He got 20 goals and five assists this season, whilst helping his side lift two trophies this season. This made Ten Hag take note in the first place, and that sort of form shouldn’t go unnoticed. Wheatley should join the ranks among the big boys for good.

It seems Ten Hag does share the same values. He was a common name seen in numerous teamsheets heading into the remainder of the campaign and got three substitute appearances for his troubles.

The Ethan Wheatley catch

However, the only thing we’ll say is unlike Mainoo and Garnacho, Wheatley should be utilised as a super sub or squad player next season.

He shouldn’t be competing with Rasmus Hojlund for the number nine spot, and rumours have it that United will bring in another striker anyway.

But, as the proof is in the pudding, these young stars need to be utilised and integrated as soon as possible, as they can yield big results.

Pre-Season 2024 may be a good time for Wheatley to shine, and then as the 24/25 campaign beckons, we can see what he’s really made of.
