Report: ‘Excellent’ player signed by Jurgen Klopp tells Liverpool he wants to leave

Liverpool could be busy in the summer transfer window, both in terms of incomings and exits at Anfield.

New manager Arne Slot will be eager to get a good look at his squad as soon as possible, with a talented, tight-knit group surely the aim.

The Reds are back in the Champions League next season, and will need a handful of new faces to be able to compete successfully.

A somewhat disappointing final campaign was endured by Jurgen Klopp, although the German did, of course, secure that all-important top-four finish.

Along with that Premier League achievement, a final Liverpool trophy went his way in the form of the League Cup.

Sepp van den Berg tells Liverpool what he wants

The boss brought many top talents to Anfield in order to achieve his success over the years, with Sepp van den Berg on that list.

The young defender was signed by Klopp back in 2019, undoubtedly as one for the future given that he was just 17 at the time.

But several loans and many years later, Van den Berg has now informed Liverpool that he wants to leave this summer, according to Sky Sport Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.

The journalist explained that the 22-year-old wants to stay in the Bundesliga having spent last season on loan at Mainz.

Plettenberg added that the centre-back has received many inquiries, including from clubs in the Premier League.

Will Arne Slot give Sepp van den Berg a chance?

Klopp clearly saw something in the defender, even if the manager did loan him out to Preston North End, Schalke and Mainz.

Van den Berg was barely given a chance by the boss, with the centre-back having just four Liverpool appearances to his name so far.

But he has really impressed elsewhere, having been the highest-rated centre-back in the German top flight last season, with his Preston displays lauded as ‘excellent’.

Slot could be eager to give the 22-year-old a run in the team next season, but that may be an impossible task if the player is desperate to force through an exit.

Liverpool should be on the lookout for a centre-back given that they have just lost Joel Matip upon the expiry of his contract.

Slot could certainly do with giving the defender a chance, but it remains to be seen what his future holds, with Van den Berg seemingly having plenty of admirers elsewhere.
