Tottenham Hotspur decision could hand Aston Villa perfect chance to upgrade key weakness

Aston Villa could see one area of the squad finally strengthened this summer, as a result of Tottenham’s transfer decisions.

Aston Villa finished ahead of Tottenham in the race for the top four in the 2023/24 season.

The Lilywhites were forced to settle for fifth place as a result of Unai Emery’s side’s success, missing out on Champions League action.

Now, the North Londoners could provide Villa with another reason to smile, as per the latest instalment of transfer news.

AC Milan are interested in Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash

This week, Sky Italy reported that AC Milan are eyeing a swoop for Aston Villa defender Matty Cash this summer.

The report claims that the right-back is wanted by Milan but Villa’s valuation of the defender is considered too high for the Serie A giants to explore further at this moment.

This is where Tottenham come in, Cash isn’t Milan’s first choice to strengthen the right-side of defence, with Spurs fullback Emerson Royal being the primary target.

Spurs reportedly want a fee in the region of £21m for the Brazilian, a price that Milan also deems to be too high.

If a swoop further into the summer for Royal doesn’t develop, perhaps Milan could look at Cash once more, which could be good news for Villa.

Selling Cash would emphasise Villa’s progression

Signed from Nottingham Forest for £16m in 2020, Cash has been a good servant to Villa however, the 2023/24 season suggested that the squad’s progression may soon surpass his level.

Despite being Villa’s only choice at right-back, Emery seemed to favour Ezri Konsa on that side of defence, seeing the centre-back as a stronger defensive option to the Poland international.

Of course, Cash has his strengths, having the ability to give something different to Konsa progressively although, the Villa boss doesn’t seem to trust the 26-year-old enough to make the starting XI.

With three years left on his current deal, now could be the ideal time for Emery to cash in on the defender, which would signal Villa’s progression to some degree.

Villa are desperate for a right-back to take the reins from Konsa and expectedly usurp Cash, with a possible sale of the Poland international only speeding up the process, whilst handing the club the room to make a profit.

Fans have been disappointed at some of Cash’s performances over the 2023/24 campaign, with some frailties noticed which flagged up as a weak point in the otherwise strong XI.

Milan’s interest should alert Villa, in what could be a sign of things to come this summer as upgrades are required to take the side to the next level.
