Report: What Everton are now expecting in the race to sign Kalvin Phillips

Behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding how Everton currently feel about potentially signing Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips this summer.

A week ago, it was reported that Everton are considering a loan move for the midfielder, although City are apparently looking to get rid of him on a permanent basis.

After starting just two games for Pep Guardiola’s side last season, the Englishman was offloaded to West Ham United on loan in January for the remainder of the season.

Now though, some extra details have come to light about the Merseyside club’s stance on Phillips and their chances of landing a deal for him during the upcoming summer transfer window.

A recent report from The Athletic had this to say on the matter.

It said: “Everton are exploring a loan move for Kalvin Phillips, although they expect significant competition and the England midfielder’s wages at Manchester City are very high.”

Phillips may not have too many clubs looking to sign him

In terms of Phillips’ wages, the 28-year-old is picking up a weekly wage of £150k-a-week according to Spotrac, which would comfortably make him the highest earner in Everton’s current squad.

Looking back over his time at West Ham, the midfielder only started three league games and ended up getting sent off in one of the eight league matches he appeared in.

His overall performances across those eight games earned Phillips a rather disappointing season rating of 5.89/10 from WhoScored, making him the lowest-rated player at West Ham.

Taking that into account, it seems strange that Everton apparently feel that they may have to fight off a lot of other clubs to land the City midfielder’s signature this summer.

Moving forward, we feel that a solution will have to be found that suits all parties and one that will ideally see Phillips playing regularly.
