Jose Mourinho is now trying to sign ‘phenomenal’ Tottenham Hotspur player

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to sell a number of players this summer and one potential exit could involve former boss Jose Mourinho.

The transfer window is now moving into focus and Tottenham Hotspur already have two deals done.

Lucas Bergvall will be arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer and Timo Werner has agreed to return on loan.

That is a decent start but Tottenham have plenty of business to do ahead of Ange Postecoglou’s second season.

The Tottenham boss has already admitted that he wants to sell a number of players – and no doubt bring in a few new additions.

A list of 15 players who could be sold this summer has already emerged with Postecoglou ready to spark something of an exodus in his pursuit of progress.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could leave Tottenham Hotspur

One of the players on that list was Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Dane had been a mainstay of the Tottenham side following a 2020 move from Southampton.

Hojbjerg had to make do with a bit-part role this past season though, starting just eight Premier League games under Postecoglou.

Now inside the the final year of his contract, Hojbjerg is surely looking to move on – especially if he shines at Euro 2024.

A new suitor has now emerged for Hojbjerg – and it’s all driven by the man who brought him to Tottenham in the first place.

Turkish reporter Ömer Çelikbaşlı claims that Jose Mourinho wants to sign Hojbjerg after becoming the new Fenerbahce boss.

It’s stated that ‘negotiations continue’ between Fenerbahce and Tottenham, with the Turkish side seemingly moving quickly having only appointed Mourinho on Saturday.

Teams in Italy and Spain are also understood to have a real interest in signing Hojbjerg but Mourinho and Fenerbahce are making a real push.

Mourinho past comments on Hojbjerg

Hojbjerg joined Tottenham four years ago with Mourinho luring him to North London.

Spurs sent Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton as part of the deal and Mourinho absolutely loved Hojbjerg at Tottenham.

Speaking in December 2002, Mourinho heaped praise upon Hojbjerg whilst branding him ‘very intelligent’.

Mourinho added that he thinks Hojbjerg is a simply ‘phenomenal player’ and even congratulated Daniel Levy on bringing the midfielder to Tottenham.

“Pierre is, first of all, very intelligent. He reads the game very well. He’s going to be a coach one day, for sure,” said Mourinho. “He’s a pain, asking questions about why we do this and why we do that. On the pitch, he reads the situation very, very well and the people that surround him are really compact, they read the game.”

“Physically he’s very, very strong and technically he’s much better than people think. Because sometimes people think the guy that is good technically is the guy that does the backheel. The guy that is good technically is the guy that does something wonderful. But these are not my words. These are words from coaches of 30, 40 years ago. Simplicity is genius. And the guy is so simple in everything he does with the ball. And I think he’s a phenomenal player. Congratulations, Mr. Levy,” he added.

Those comments mean it’s no great surprise that Mourinho now wants to sign Hojbjerg again.

Whether the Dane would be interested in a move to Turkey is another matter; he may well have interest from other Premier League clubs alongside interest from Italy and Spain.

Mourinho will hope to tempt Hojbjerg to Fenerbahce though and Tottenham are unlikely to stand in his way as Postecoglou looks to retool his squad.
