Tottenham Hotspur make first move to sign ‘exceptional’ playmaker ahead of Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur continue to be linked with potential signings after achieving qualification for next season’s Europa League.

Ange Postecoglou’s first season at Tottenham Hotspur started so well but ended on slightly strange terms.

Tottenham went 10 unbeaten to start the season but lost five of the last seven and missed out on Champions League action.

The only two wins in that run came against relegated sides Burnley and Sheffield United, so Tottenham head into the summer window with major question marks.

Postecoglou has already admitted that he wants to really change the Tottenham squad, opening the door for plenty of departures and more than a few arrivals.

We are only just into June and Tottenham have already secured two signings for the summer; Swedish wonderkid Lucas Bergvall will arrive and Timo Werner is returning on loan from RB Leipzig.

There will be lots of business done at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer and the Spurs boss may have an interesting target in mind.

Tottenham Hotspur want Rayan Cherki

Werner’s return helps Tottenham both out wide and up front, offering a versatile attacking threat.

Postecoglou may well want players who can operate in multiple positions, offering flexibility and plentiful options ahead of the Europa League campaign.

That would certainly make sense with the latest Tottenham rumour as Spurs reportedly look into a move for Lyon star Rayan Cherki.

Sports Zone in France now report that Tottenham have joined Liverpool in making contact with Lyon over a potential deal for Cherki.

It’s stated that Liverpool and Tottenham are the ‘most interested’ clubs when it comes to Cherki, though Paris Saint-Germain are also keen.

Sports Zone add that Cherki ‘wants to leave’ Lyon this summer, leaving the door open for a Premier League move this summer.

Cherki’s versatility is clear having played in a host of positions just this season alone.

The 20-year-old has played as an attacking midfielder, as a winger – on either flank – and even as a makeshift striker.

One goal and six assists isn’t an incredible return but Cherki certainly has big potential and exceptional technical ability.

Postecoglou may believe that he can tap into Cherki’s flair and creative talents and give Tottenham a real playmaker for years to come.

Who is Tottenham target Cherki?

Cherki hails from Lyon and joined the OL ranks at the age of just seven.

The talented playmaker was playing reserve team football at just 15 and was given a Champions League debut at 16.

Cherki has long been considered to be one of the finest talents to emerge from the Lyon ranks and he has now racked up nearly 150 first-team appearances.

A France Under-21 international with 19 caps to his name, Cherki has yet to make his senior debut – but that may not be far away if he keeps developing.

Hailed as ‘exceptional’ by former Lyon boss Laurent Blanc, Cherki has bags of potential and needs the right manager to really unlock the full extent of his ability.

Juts six goals in 116 Ligue 1 games is an indication that Cherki could still improve his end product but Tottenham may well pounce as he seeks to leave Lyon.
