Maintenance worker who used master key to rob apartment unit gets jail sentence

A maintenance worker of an apartment building who used his master key to rob one of the units has been sentenced to prison.

Troy Jones, 59, of Jackson, was sentenced on Friday to 364 days in county jail as a condition of a three-year probationary term, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release. He was convicted of burglary and theft at a trial earlier this year.

A unit at the Gardens at Jackson Twenty-One apartments was robbed of $4,500 in cash and an Apple Watch on December 23, 2021, authorities said. Residents of the unit, located on Chatham Court West in Jackson Township, noticed the items missing after returning home from work that day.

Police later accused Jones, a maintenance worker at the apartment complex at the time, of using his master key to break into the apartment and steal the items while the residents were at work. He was charged with the crimes about a month later.
