Report: West Ham United interested in signing Lionel Messi's 'sensational' £17m teammate

West Ham United are considering a move for Lionel Messi’s ‘sensational’ £17m-rated teammate, according to a recent report.

Julen Lopetegui has joined West Ham United following David Moyes’ departure and will be drawing up a list of targets with Tim Steidten ahead of the summer transfer window.

The former Real Madrid man is expected to implement a possession-based brand of football at the London Stadium and will need additions to align with his system.

That said, one ‘sensational’ midfielder has already been linked.

West Ham interested in signing Diego Gomez

According to GiveMeSport, West Ham are interested in signing Inter Miami midfielder Diego Gomez this summer.

The 21-year-old only joined the MLS outfit last year but has already impressed enough to be linked with a move to the Premier League.

Brighton and Hove Albion are thought to be considering a move for the Paraguay international, with a £17m price tag mooted.

Any forthcoming deal won’t be completed until after the Olympics, though, so it seems he could be awaiting offers from sides with European football.

Diego Gomez statistics

It’s easy to see why West Ham are interested in signing Gomez when you take a look at his impressive FBref statistics.

The 2003-born ranks in the top three per cent for successful take-ons compared to his positional peers across 14 leagues, evincing his terrific dribbling ability.

Gomez, who can operate as a number 10, also sits in the top two per for expected assisted goals, amplifying his creativity.

If West Ham are to land his signature, it’d be a really exciting acquisition.
