Aston Villa have learned of Juventus’ interest in Luiz, with a swap deal reported to be in the minds of the Italian giants.
Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has speculated that the Serie A club want to sign the midfielder, with Weston McKennie the player that could go the opposite way.
Di Marzio claims that Villa value Luiz around £50m however, Juventus aren’t the only club to be admirers of the Premier League star.
It’s no secret that Arsenal like the 25-year-old, after having three bids rejected by Villa in 2022 in an attempt to purchase the Brazil international.
While Juventus’ interest is dominating the media in the build-up to the transfer window, journalist Jacob Tanswell believes that Arsenal is the more likely destination.
Speaking on the 1874 Podcast, The Athletic journalist admitted he would be ‘surprised’ if Juventus struck a deal with Villa for Luiz.
“I’d be massively surprised if Juventus get Douglas Luiz and they pay £60-£70m for him.
“The only way they can do it is if they try and do it quite intelligently with swap deals, paying over a certain amount of time. They’re trying to circumvent the rules a little bit, hence why the Weston McKennie swap deal has come into play.
“Arsenal have always been one of the more firm admirers of Douglas Luiz and that admiration is still there, I always suspected it would be that type of club.
“Juventus are a massive club but the financial side of things makes it quite surprising for me.”
Villa would be smart to wait for interest from Arsenal
Though offloading a star player early would somewhat aid Villa’s PSR concerns, the club would be wise to stall Juventus to see if Arsenal come lurking.
The Gunners would be able to offer a far greater price for Luiz amid their long-standing admiration for the player.
Villa would be the real winners if they could secure a fee around the region of their asking price for the Brazilian, who is a firm starter in Emery’s system.
Aston Villa’s links to Conor Gallagher suggest that Monchi and the boss are prepared to a degree to lose Luiz, with a sale surely more beneficial than a swap deal in this instance.
