£25m man officially leaves club just days after reported Wolves interest, he'll now become a free-agent

A player linked with Wolves in recent days is to leave his club and become a free agent this summer.

Gary O’Neil is set for a big transfer window, with Wolves looking to build on finishing 14th in the Premier League table in 2023/24.

There were some very positive signs last season. But ultimately, injuries proved very costly for Wolves, with results taking a real nosedive in the final couple of months of the season.

O’Neil is keen to pack out his squad a bit more next season, and a number of players have already been linked with a move to Molineux.

One such player is Ryan Sessegnon, who has officially now left Tottenham Hotspur…

This morning, Tottenham Hotspur have announced that a number of players are leaving them this summer.

Ryan Sessegnon is one of four players to depart, the others being Japhet Tanganga, Eric Dier and Ivan Perisic. All will now become free agents.

Sessegnon had joined Spurs from Fulham back in 2019 for around £25 million, after emerging as one of the brightest young English talents at Craven Cottage.

But Sessegnon’s time at Spurs didn’t go to plan, with injuries limiting him to just 57 appearances for the club.

Now, Sessegnon is looking for a new club – and one wonders if Wolves may consider a move. It was reported recently that Wanderers were showing ‘a level of interest’ in the player. But Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace were also mentioned.

Of course at the moment, there is a lot of speculation surrounding the future of Rayan Ait-Nouri at Wolves.

The Algerian had a very impressive 2023/24 and is thought to be on the radar of several top clubs right now.

O’Neil may be tempted by Sessegnon

One would imagine that Wolves won’t make any move for a left-sided defender unless one of Ait-Nouri or Hugo Bueno leaves the club this summer.

If one of those players does go, then perhaps O’Neil will fancy working with Sessegnon, and feel confident of getting the player back on track.

We have seen how O’Neil has improved practically every player in the Wolves squad in his first season. Sessegnon was once one of the brightest young English talents in the game. He was swashbuckling at Fulham and we all know O’Neil loves a bit of pace and directness.

Any move for the 24-year-old would obviously be a risk. The player’s injury record really hasn’t been very good at all over the last few years, and we saw the impact injuries had on Wolves last season.

But perhaps O’Neil will see something he can work with there. The fact he would not cost anything in terms of a transfer fee might appeal.
