'Likely...': Journalist says when Leeds United will publish retained list as Sheffield Wednesday wait on Ian Poveda

Sheffield Wednesday are waiting to find out the fate of loan star Ian Poveda at Leeds United.

Sheffield Wednesday signed Ian Poveda on loan from Leeds United during the January transfer window.

The Colombian immediately became a fan favourite, going on to feature 10 times in the Championship and grabbing himself one assist.

Poveda though would have spells on the sidelines, missing the last five games through injury as Sheffield Wednesday pulled off a miraculous 20th place finish.

Since, reports have suggested that Sheffield Wednesday are desperate to re-sign the 24-year-old, though the Owls face competition from the likes of Burnley, Luton Town, and Sunderland.

Danny Rohl and his Sheffield Wednesday side are also waiting on Leeds United to actually announce their retained list with Poveda among those out of contract this summer.

Earlier this year, it was claimed that Leeds United would be letting Poveda leave the club as a free agent this summer.

When will Leeds United announce their retained list

Leeds United finished 3rd in the Championship last season, then reaching the play-off final where they lost against Southampton at Wembley.

So that will have inevitably put a delay on proceedings, though many on social media expected the Whites to announce their retained list at the start of this week.

The wait goes on, but LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross has now suggested in a Q&A that Leeds United’s retained list is ‘likely to be published at the back end of next week’.

So for Sheffield Wednesday, the wait to find out what Poveda’s Leeds United fate will be, if already predictable, will come to an end very shortly.

And the Owls may well be lining up their offer of a return for Hillsborough for the moment that Poveda becomes a free agent.

Sheffield Wednesday face key battle in Ian Poveda pursuit

Poveda, despite his injury troubles over the past few seasons, has options ahead of this summer.

The likes of Burnley and Luton Town, and maybe even Sunderland will all be expected to challenge at the top end of the Championship next season.

That could offer Poveda an unlikely route into the Premier League should he join, whereas Sheffield Wednesday’s next season still feels somewhat uncertain.

It feels unlikely that they’ll struggle as much as they did last season. But if Rohl can’t get the players in that he wants then it won’t be plain sailing.

Poveda flourished at Hillsborough though. The Rohl style of play seemed to suit him well and he knows that if he returns, Rohl will show faith in him, and the fans will too.

He’d be a shrewd capture for the Owls if they can bring him in on a free transfer, and if he can stay fit then he could be one of the top players in the league next season.
