Sheffield Wednesday can repeat Di'Shon Bernard trick with departing Manchester United gem - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday could repeat their success with Di’Shon Bernard with a summer move for another departing Manchester United player.

Sheffield Wednesday signed Di’Shon Bernard, 23, as a free agent last summer, following his release from Manchester United

The Jamaican international, who’s playing in Copa America this summer, went on to shine for the Owls, featuring 34 times in the Championship.

But he’s out of contract this summer. Sheffield Wednesday are desperate to retain him but he has interest from elsewhere.

Whether or not he stays at Hillsborough beyond this summer remains to be seen, if not unlikely.

But expect Danny Rohl and co to be preparing for all outcomes, with bodies needed across the pitch if Sheffield Wednesday are to enjoy a much more promising 2024/25 campaign.

And Rohl may well look to repeat his success story with Bernard, with a move for a former youth teammate of Bernard’s at Manchester United; Omari Forson.

Omari Forson set to leave Manchester United

Forson, 19, joined the Manchester United youth academy in 2019. He would’ve spent time there with Bernard who was technically a Manchester United first-team player by 2019, though he never made a Premier League appearance for the Red Devils.

Forson though made four Premier League appearances last season. But Fabrizio Romano says that the winger will leave United as a free agent at the end of this month, with Championship clubs known to be interested.

Also able to play as a no.10, Forson’s highlights show that he’s capable of playing effectively on both wings, and even as more of a wing-back as opposed to a winger.

He’s at his best when cutting inside, either finding a teammate, putting in a cross, or working a shot on goal himself.

United were reportedly keen for him to stay at the club which shows how highly-rated he is, but he’s now set to leave the club and pursue first-team experience elsewhere.

Sheffield Wednesday should join race for Omari Forson

Forson certainly looks like an exciting prospect, and the fact that he’s ready to leave United and take a risk to play first-team football tells us that he’s a very driven and motivated player.

His highlights too showcase his close control, and his neat passing ability, especially at short-range, which could make him ideal in an intense, short-passing Rohl set up.

What’s more is that Sheffield Wednesday really don’t have many players in the wing-back department, with only a couple wingers too in Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama.

Forson could yet be a natural heir to Marvin Johnson who’s now 33 years old, and also the only left wing-back available to Rohl right now.

There’s reported interest in Forson from the likes of Sunderland and Middlesbrough; that could suggest that he’ll arrive in the Championship this summer, but it also suggests that it’d be a potentially difficult pursuit for the Owls, should they have take an interest.

Bernard may well be able to put in a good word about Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday, and the Owls know that after welcoming in Bernard, United produce good, young players.
