'Very familiar': Journalist explains why free agent will be the 'perfect signing' for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have been told they are about to make a ‘perfect signing’, despite criticism.

Sheffield Wednesday are a week away from the transfer window opening, having been linked with a number of players since the season came to an end.

The Owls are eager to bring back the three loanees that made such a big impact in the second half of the campaign.

Ian Poveda is set to become a free agent when he is released by Leeds United, while Ike Ugbo could be available but will be very difficult to lure in due to competition and his price tag.

James Beadle is the most likely to return to Hillsborough if Brighton decide to send him back out on loan again.

While the teenager could return as their No.1 again, reports have also claimed that they will sign Ben Hamer on a free transfer too.

The 36-year-old was released by Watford at the end of the season, having racked up 42 clean sheets in 158 appearances in the Championship across his career.

Ben Hamer can be ‘perfect’ for Sheffield Wednesday

Hamer’s impending arrival received mixed reaction, but journalist Rob Staton was baffled by the criticism of the veteran shot-stopper.

Speaking on the Football Heaven podcast, he said: “This is a person who is very familiar with the staff and who can easily… what you want from someone in his kind of role is – we need you to play four games because the goalkeeper’s got an injury, or we need you to sort of help the young ones.

“If Beadle comes back, what a perfect person to have alongside him – someone who has been there and done that. He is very experienced, someone who can be reliable when you need him to be reliable, who you know and have a relationship with. That’s the perfect signing for what they’re bringing him to be. He was also pretty good last year as well.

“But the reaction on Twitter was 50% of people got it, and 50% of the people are having a laugh.”

James Beadle will benefit from a role model

Ben Hamer has been playing across the Premier League and EFL for the past 18 years, making 347 senior appearances in all competitions and winning promotion twice.

He is hugely experienced and would be a perfect role model for both Beadle and Pierce Charles.

If Wednesday are going to opt to make a 19-year-old their first choice, then there is no doubting that he could really benefit from having an older head helping him grow and develop.

He is unlikely to start many games and could instead be really helpful for the dressing room, so it really isn’t anything for supporters to be concerned about.
