Dejphon Chansiri could have a £10m player on his hands at Sheffield Wednesday next summer - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday and owner Dejphon Chansiri could well have a very valuable player on their hands come this time next year.

Big-money player sales come few and far between at Sheffield Wednesday, with Lucas Joao being the most recent, big-money departure.

Reading paid Sheffield Wednesday £5million for the striker back in 2019, though the Owls haven’t sold anyone for nearly as much since then.

Jack Hunt went to Bristol City in an apparent £1.6million move in 2018, though for Wednesday, their current pattern seems to be signing players on free transfers, and eventually letting them go for free.

Danny Rohl will look to change that this summer. He’ll want the Owls to start signing them young and making them into valuable assets, so that Sheffield Wednesday can build wealth and build towards the Premier League.

Right now, there’s not too many players within this Sheffield Wednesday side who could eventually fetch the club a big transfer fee.

But their best chance might lie with Anthony Musaba.

Anthony Musaba shines in maiden Sheffield Wednesday season

Sheffield Wednesday signed Dutch winger Musaba from AS Monaco last summer, paying an undisclosed fee for the 23-year-old.

The fee was never released. But whatever it was, owner Dejphon Chansiri may be glad he paid it, with Musaba going on to score seven goals and assist five more in 43 Championship outings.

And Musaba scored some really important goals too; winning goals in games against Stoke City and QPR back in December, and then another all-important goal in a 2-0 win at QPR in April.

Reportedly under contract until 2026, Musaba is currently worth £1.1million according to Transfermarkt.

But if he enjoys another standout season in the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday then we could see that number really sky-rocket in time for the 2025 summer transfer window.

How much could Anthony Musaba be worth at Sheffield Wednesday

The Championship is becoming a real breeding ground for top, young talents, with Premier League teams often poaching players from the second.

Jack Clarke at Sunderland for example; he scored nine league goals and assisted 12 in 2022/23, then scoring 15 and assisting four in 2023/24 and is now reportedly valued at £20million.

His Sunderland teammate Jobe Bellingham at 18 years old, scored seven goals in the Championship last season and is also valued at £20million, per reports.

In the past, names like Jarrod Bowen and Eberechi Eze have both been signed from the Championship to the Premier League for sizeable fees, and have gone on to succeed.

Musaba though remains a very raw player. He was misfiring at the start of last season but he really grew into the league as the season went on.

And now, entering the 2024/25 campaign with a full campaign of Championship football under his belt, and a good one at that, also playing under Rohl and likely playing around new and better players, Musaba has the perfect opportunity to really take the next step in his development.

He’s still young, too, and if he can go on to score 10 or more Championship goals next season and grab himself some assists, logic dictates that he should be warranting an eight-figure transfer sum.

And the timing could play a factor as well; out of contract in 2026, if Musaba shines next season, then next summer, Sheffield Wednesday may have to cash in in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer, or to avoid panic selling in the 2026 January transfer window.

A lot has to fall into place first. But Musaba and indeed names like Djeidi Gassama and Bailey Cadamarteri could go on to become valuable assets for the Owls.
