After a challenging loan spell at relegated La Liga side Granada, Manchester United winger Facundo Pellistri faces an uncertain future.
Pellistri did well with the opportunities he had, scoring and assisting against Barcelona, but his side were always doomed, and he did not have a lot to shout about after his heroics at the Nou Camp.
Whilehe expects to return to Carrington to pre-season, one transfer expert told United In Focus he would be shocked if Pellistri is not sold this summer.
Facundo Pellistri stars in Uruguay win
One element in Facundo Pellistri’s favour is his consistently strong performances at international level with Uruguay.
Under new coach Marcelo Bielsa, Uruguay are of the world’s in-form teams, beating Brazil and Argentina, and last night they not only defeated Mexico, they wiped the floor with them.
Uruguay thrashed Mexico 4-0, with Pellistri getting on the scoresheet to score his first ever international goal.
He provided an assist for good measure too, his sixth for his country in 20 appearances to date.
It was a stunning piece of play, a dangerous run to break the offside trap, before rounding the goalkeeper, and squaring the ball for an open goal tap-in that even Darwin Nunez could not miss.
ESPN South America wrote: “Pellistri appeared by surprise at the penalty spot. and, after shooting first, he sent the ball to the back of the net before Rangel’s frustrated attempt to avoid the goal.”
El Pais graded Pellistri’s performance 8/10, describing how he started and finished the move for Uruguay’s to double their lead.
“He was the one who recovered the ball at the beginning of the play for Uruguay’s second goal and, as Brian Rodríguez went on the wing, Pellistri arrived at the area in the number nine position to convert.”
El Observador noted: “Every time Uruguay attacked from the right, they found advantages on the Mexican left side.”
Pellistri has quality but no place in United side under Ten Hag
Manchester United will need to sell players to raise funds and Facundo Pellistri looks like one player the club could cash in on this summer.
Since his move to the club in 2020, he has been unable to establish himself in the side, and being sent on loan in January underlined his need to get away and play regular football.
Pellistri has since been overtaken by Amad Diallo, who came on strong in the second half of the season.
United paid around £7 million to Penarol for Pellistri, and he is one of those rare players United could sell on for a profit. Given his international exploits, United could quite easily double – and then some – the fee paid.
