"Roy gave him": Pundit now shares exactly why Hodgson deserves credit for Adam Wharton's incredible rise

Adam Wharton has enjoyed an incredible rise for Crystal Palace over the past few months and one man deserves credit.

It’s official, Adam Wharton, Dean Henderson, Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi are heading to the European Championships after Gareth Southgate named his 26-man official squad.

For Crystal Palace this is just another sign of the fact the club is rising up the ranks in England and that right now, the club possess some of the country’s greatest talents.

Wharton is the most shining example of this, having been developing at the rate of a rocket ship over the past six months.

But as he gears up for an unexpected and inaugural tournament with England, one pundit has suggested that Wharton owes a thank you to Roy Hodgson.

Why Roy Hodgson deserves credit for Adam Wharton at Crystal Palace

Speaking with South London Press prior to the England squad announcement, former Palace boss Alan Smith was discussing both Wharton and Eze.

In an interesting point, he explained that Hodgson actually deserves credit for the performances of Wharton since his £22m move from Blackburn, and he explained why.

“We have to give a little bit of credit to Roy Hodgson here. He’s actually given him a basis and a structure to play for.

“I know, sometimes, people are critical of Roy, but Wharton’s got quite a bit of flair about him and I think that Roy gave him a structure to play in.

“He sees a pass, he knows when to defend, he knows when to drop off.

“So, I have that down to good coaching and now, under the new regime it’s allowed him now to give his natural talent, it’s come on.”

Wharton should be starting for England this summer for this reason

Heading to the Euros already, there’s also a fairly good chance that Wharton actually ends up forcing his way into the starting line-up alongside Declan Rice.

This is due to the balance Wharton brings with his impeccable technical skills which make him seem to be straight out of Spain’s World Cup-winning 2010 side.

But then he also has the temperament and defensive capabilities combined with a mature head which makes him arguably the country’s most exciting midfielder alongside only Kobbie Mainoo with both being potentially world class.

For this reason, Wharton should be a player Southgate is seriously considering handing a start to in Germany on June 16th.
