Report: People inside Chelsea think their £50m player will not suit Enzo Maresca's system

People at Chelsea have a feeling one of the Blues’ current stars may not fit into Enzo Maresca’s team.

The Blues parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino despite a strong end to the 2023/24 season which saw Chelsea finish sixth.

The club’s owners decided to bring in Maresca, and the Italian has been tasked with the responsibility of bringing Chelsea back to the top.

Maresca’s appointment, however, could be bad news for one Chelsea player.

People inside Chelsea are worried about Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher has been in the news more than any other Chelsea player recently.

The Englishman was one of the best players under Pochettino in the 2023/24 season. He played almost every game and looked significantly better than his two super-expensive midfield partners.

However, Gallagher is still one of the players Chelsea would like to sell this summer, and Aston Villa have opened talks with the Blues to sign him.

Tottenham are also said to be preparing a bid to sign the England international, who will enter the final year of his Chelsea contract in July.

Now, The Guardian has revealed one worry people inside Chelsea have about Gallagher.

It has been claimed that some people within the club feel he ‘may not be suited to the possession football’ that Maresca favours.

That could be another reason why the Blues want to get rid of Gallagher once the summer transfer window opens.

Gallagher is said to be disappointed by the fact that Chelsea are almost forcing him to leave the club before the start of the new season.

Chelsea’s Gallagher plan could backfire

Chelsea will sell Gallagher if they get an offer of over £50 million this summer – that is the plan right now, claims The Guardian.

That stance is clear from the Blues, and clubs like Aston Vila and Tottenham are seriously considering making a move to sign him.

Gallagher, however, could do something now that would cost Chelsea dearly.

The Englishman will enter the final year of his contract in July. If he refuses to leave this summer and then turns down any contact that’s offered to him, he could leave for nothing in 2025.

Chelsea really need to rethink their plan on Gallagher. If they aren’t careful, they could lose him for free next year.
