‘Desperate’: ‘Brilliant’ manager thought he could get the Liverpool job, but he was never close – journalist

Arne Slot is the new Liverpool manager.

After Jurgen Klopp’s departure, the Dutchman is now the new man in the Anfield dugout, but throughout various points of this year, it looked as though the Reds would go in another direction.

To begin with, Xabi Alonso looked as though he would be the man to come in at Anfield before he committed his future to Bayer Leverkusen, and after Alonso’s decision, Ruben Amorim looked as though he was the frontrunner for the job.

Amorim was said to be a target for Liverpool, but according to Sergio Krithinas, speaking on The Transfers Podcast, Amorim was never as close to Liverpool as he may have thought he was.

Ruben Amorim was never that close to Liverpool

Krithinas spoke about the ‘brilliant‘ manager and his flirtation with Liverpool.

“How close was he (Amorim) to the Liverpool job?”

“Looking back I think he was never as close as we all thought and not as close as he thought himself. Even the meeting with West Ham was a desperate move to get Liverpool’s attention when everyone realised the Liverpool job was going to someone else,” Krithinas said.

Amorim’s difficult summer

Ruben Amorim has had a very difficult summer by the sounds of it.

After flirting with Liverpool, Barcelona, West Ham and Bayern Munich, the Portuguese manager has ended up staying at Sporting, despite, quite clearly, being ready for the next step in his career.

For one reason or another, these top clubs have decided against taking a punt on Amorim, and that must be incredibly frustrating for a manager who has aspirations of working at the very highest level.

Of course, as we see every single year, it won’t be long before there are a fresh host of top jobs available, and perhaps Amorim will get a chance next time around, but, for now, he remains at Sporting waiting for an opportunity to make a move.
