20-year-old Chelsea youngster has a fantastic chance to thrive if they sell Conor Gallagher - opinion

Chelsea are reportedly still open to the prospect of selling Conor Gallagher this summer.

The England international has just a year left on his current contract, with there being no indication up to now that he will be signing a new deal.

The latest club to be linked with Gallagher are Aston Villa, although it has been claimed that his feeling about wanting to stay is yet to change.

However, it has emerged in recent days that there are fears amongst some at the club that the player who spent most of last season as club captain may actually not be best suited to new manager Enzo Maresca’s style of play.

While the new boss already has a plan in place to get the best out of Enzo Fernandez, there has been no word yet on what he is planning with the 24-year-old.

If things don’t work out for Gallagher, it is easy to look at the current Chelsea side and work out who will have the best opportunity to thrive in his absence.

Huge chance for Carney Chukwuemeka if Gallagher leaves

Carney Chukwuemeka struggled greatly with injuries last season, however made the most of the limited appearances he made with vital contributions.

He was actually a starter for the first two games of the campaign before his knee problems cropped up, and he looked a real talent as part of the midfield.

With very few reports linking the Blues to a new midfielder at this stage, it is likely Maresca is going to have to work with what he’s got as far as the players there go.

If he can maintain fitness, there is a real chance for Chukwuemeka to prove why the club spent a sizeable fee on a young player who had little time left on his contract, and that he can be a regular for Chelsea in the near future.
