Liverpool are not in fact close to signing 'amazing' Newcastle target - journalist

Newcastle United have already lost out before the transfer window has opened.

Now, Tosin Adarabioyo may not have been Newcastle’s leading target after all but to watch him join Chelsea is obviously a blow.

The chance to sign a Premier League-proven defender on a free transfer does not come around particularly often, even if Newcastle look to be doing something similar with Lloyd Kelly.

Generally, it is rarely something that the club will have the luxury of.

As much of a blow as it is, it’s obviously unlikely to be season-defining.

Still, what’s important from now is that Newcastle don’t continue to miss out on targets.

Not playing in the Champions League does not help their cause on that front but the draining nature of last season would suggest the squad needs refreshment.

One of the players most strongly linked with a move to St James’ Park is Atalanta midfielder, Ederson.

Touted as a target in January too, it seems there’s something of a long-standing interest in the Brazilian.

Liverpool were recently claimed by Sport Zone to have almost agreed terms over a move for the midfielder, who was hailed as “amazing” by pundit Owen Hargreaves for his performance in the Europa League final.

However, fresh hope for Newcastle has emerged.

Liverpool have not yet agreed terms in deal to sign Ederson

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), The Athletic’s James Pearce refuted claims the Reds were closing to signing the 24-year-old.

Ederson may already have made up his mind about his next club

Sadly for Newcastle and Liverpool, Ederson may have already made up his mind on what becomes of his career this summer.

Reports from Italian outlet Tuttomeractoweb suggest he was keen to leave Bergamo this summer but is tempted to make a U-turn in order to play in the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup for the Serie A side.
