Championship rivals 'keen to try and sign' Sheffield Wednesday star, they're 'set for talks' - journalist

A Sheffield Wednesday player is ‘set for talks’ with a rival Championship club, it has been revealed.

Sheffield Wednesday have a handful of players facing uncertain futures in S6, with several out of contract at the end of this month.

The likes of Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer have agreed new deals, whilst it’s thought that striker Josh Windass is also close to agreeing new terms.

But there’s still uncertainty over a handful of players, including the likes of Di’Shon Bernard who’s been offered new terms, but has interest from elsewhere.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Cameron Dawson now looks set to leave the club, following the reported arrival of free agent goalkeeper Ben Hamer.

There’s also question marks over the future of Will Vaulks; the 30-year-old was named the Owls’ Player of the Season after featuring 34 times in the Championship and claiming three assists.

But the Welsh midfielder is now set for talks with a rival Championship club.

Will Vaulks ‘set for talks’ with Oxford United

It’s now been revealed that Vaulks is ‘set for talks’ with Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship rivals Oxford United.

Journalist Joe Crann has revealed on X that Oxford, who earned promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs last season, ‘are keen to try and sign’ Vaulks upon his Sheffield Wednesday contract expiry.

Vaulks has been at Hillsborough for the past two seasons and has been offered terms to stay for next season. He’s made 80 league appearances for Sheffield Wednesday with two goals and five assists.

Formerly of Rotherham United and Cardiff City, Vaulks earned praise throughout the last campaign, mainly for his performances under Danny Rohl.

He often provided great coverage in front of the defence, ending the season with the most tackles-per-game and most interceptions-per-game, per Sofascore.

Should Will Vaulks stay at Sheffield Wednesday

After an impressive 2023/24 season, Vaulks certainly has options to stay in the Championship, and it may be down to whether or not he fancies a change.

A move to Oxford United would certainly be a new challenge with the U’s likely to be fighting near the bottom end of the Championship next season.

Sheffield Wednesday though, given their form under Rohl, may well be challenging at the top end of the table next time round, so it could be a chance for Vaulks to challenge for promotion to the Premier League.

The club clearly want him to stay, given the new contract offer, and if he leaves then he’ll definitely need replacing.

But Vaulks leaving gives Rohl a chance to bring in someone younger and fresher, and mould them into the way he wants to play.

It’s certainly going to be a tough call for Vaulks to make.
