'Believed...': Journalist clarifies Ian Poveda's stance on Sheffield Wednesday return this summer

Ian Poveda will be leaving Leeds United as a free agent this summer, with Sheffield Wednesday interested in a permanent deal.

Leeds United announced their retained list on Friday, revealing that former Sheffield Wednesday loan man Ian Poveda will be leaving the club as a free agent this summer.

The 24-year-old spent four years at Leeds United but only managed 30 total appearances for the first-team, with one assist.

Injuries and loan spells away from the club prevented former Manchester City youngster Poveda from ever kicking on with the Whites.

But after an impressive loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday in the second half of last season, Danny Rohl is now keen for Poveda to return on a permanent deal.

Poveda featured 10 times in the league and grabbed one assist as the Owls went on to finish in 20th place of the Championship table.

The two-time Colombian international also has interest from the likes of Burnley, Luton Town, and Sunderland ahead of the summer transfer window, which opens on June 14th.

Ian Poveda stance on Sheffield Wednesday return

Poveda certainly won’t be short of suitors this summer, and he’s apparently open to a return to S6.

Journalist Alex Miller has revealed on X that Sheffield Wednesday ‘remain interested’ in a move for Poveda, and that he’s ‘believed to be open’ to a return to Hillsborough.

Miller also reiterates the fact that Poveda has interest from elsewhere, but doesn’t mention any new clubs in the race for his signature.

Poveda has spent time on loan with Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, and Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, and the second tier appears to be his likeliest next destination.

Can Sheffield Wednesday win the race for Ian Poveda

Poveda will certainly become hot property when he officially becomes a free agent on July 1st.

He’s not taking part in Copa America either, which leaves him free to discuss his next move, and Sheffield Wednesday fans would love to see him return.

He gave the team an added edge and spark in attack; in the eight games that he started for Sheffield Wednesday, they won six of them.

And Rohl may have an upper hand in the race for Poveda given the fact that he played for the Owls on loan last season.

Not only that, but Rohl showed great faith in the winger, and he also got the best out of him after what’s been a tough last few years for Poveda.

Expect him to explore his options and expect him to have interest from Europe too. But Sheffield Wednesday may well have the first say, and with Poveda open to a return, it could be a deal that comes to fruition soon.
