Fabrizio Romano shares fresh update on James Trafford to Newcastle with two alternatives also in the mix

Newcastle United are looking for a new goalkeeper and according to reports this weekend are keen on on Burnley’s James Trafford.

The young England stopper endured relegation with the Clarets last season but remains highly-rated among Premier League recruitment teams.

Reports earlier in the day from The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope suggested Newcastle have made a bid for Trafford as they look to tie down a new number one.

And now taking to X to further update the situation, Fabrizio Romano has shared a fresh take on the situation.

Fabrizio Romano shares James Trafford to Newcastle update

Taking to X, Romano has credited Hope with the original report but has also added in some extra detail.

Romano claims that Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and Valencia’s Georgi Mamardashvili are both among the options for Newcastle as well, albeit they are considered too expensive right now.

Further, it’s also claimed by Romano that there is no agreement for Trafford just yet and that a 20% sell on to Manchester City is also in place.

Trafford joined Burnley in a deal worth around £19m last summer.

He had an up and down campaign with the Clarets, making a number of high profile errors which proved costly in Vincent Kompany’s side eventually going down.

Trafford can be number one for years

One relegation doesn’t make a bad goalkeeper and James Trafford is more than capable of going on to have a superb career in the game.

The idea of joining Newcastle and being their number one under Eddie Howe for years to come is something that will appeal to the youngster.

Like Aaron Ramsdale, who bounced back from two relegations in a row with Bournemouth and Sheffield United, Trafford can bounce back and succeed.

And if the deal is around the £20m mark, then it could well be a bargain buy for the Mags.
