Report: Sheffield Wednesday are now closing in on 'immense' gem in first signing of the summer

Sheffield Wednesday look ‘set’ to sign one ‘immense’ player on loan again this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are just days away from the summer transfer window and will be eager to snap up some of the players they have been linked with.

The Owls will need to boost their ranks if they are to achieve a top half finish this season, but may have to act fast if they don’t want to lose out to other teams.

While they will mostly be looking for higher quality players to replace some of their weaker spots, they are also hoping to re-sign some of the loanees that shone last term.

Ian Poveda, Ike Ugbo and James Beadle are all on the club’s radar, though the latter is currently looking the most likely to return to Hillsborough.

James Beadle set to return to Sheffield Wednesday

According to The Sun this morning (p.55), Brighton are ‘set to send’ Beadle back to Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

There was uncertainty around whether the Seagulls would allow the 19-year-old to leave, but the report claims they will send him back to Yorkshire and will instead debate over the future of Carl Rushworth, who impressed at Swansea last season.

The goalkeeper is wanted by Ipswich Town this summer, but could be forced to stay as Brighton look to guarantee Beadle regular game-time out on loan.

The return of Beadle will arrive after reports claimed that Cameron Dawson will leave Wednesday after 14 years, while Ben Hamer will arrive on a free transfer.

Do the Owls need to sign a third goalkeeper this summer?

After Beadle’s ‘immense’ six months with the club, there is no doubt that he will retain the no.1 spot for next season, while Hamer will be back-up.

What will be interesting to see is whether Danny Rohl will want to add another goalkeeper to the squad, or they will use Pierce Charles as another option.

The teenager made two appearances for the senior team in the FA Cup this year, while he has been named on the bench on several occasions.

Like Beadle at Brighton, Charles needs game-time to develop and grow, so keeping Charles at Wednesday as the third-choice goalkeeper seems like a waste.

The best option for the youngster is surely to be sent out on loan to himself to one of the lower leagues, as his only opportunity could be a further few appearances in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

In which case, the Owls will need to look to add another shot-stopper to the team over the next few months.
