Leicester City must consider 'special' manager to replace Maresca, he'd guarantee Prem survival - opinion

It has now been a week since Enzo Maresca left Leicester City to take up the vacant managerial role at Chelsea.

Having guided Leicester City to the Championship title last season, it was hoped Enzo Maresca would reject Chelsea’s advances to continue his work at the King Power.

However, that was not the case, leaving Leicester having to find a new manager ready for a season in which Premier League survival is the aim.

Various names have been linked with the job, with Steve Cooper, Carlos Corberan, Graham Potter and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just some of those linked.

There is one out of work manager who has not been mentioned in discussions regarding the Leicester job, though, who would all but guarantee the club stay in the top flight.

Leicester City should target David Moyes as Enzo Maresca replacement

That manager is David Moyes.

The Scottish manager recently left West Ham United where he guided the club three consecutive seasons in Europe as well as winning the Europa Conference League in 2023.

Moyes has experience in abundance, with 26 years as a manager under his belt and has a reputation of building teams.

Arguments about his substance over style approach became all-consuming towards the end of his time as West Ham manager despite taking them from relegation fodder to European regulars, but he is an incredibly safe pair of hands.

His short spell at Manchester United as well as relegation at Sunderland damaged Moyes’ reputation but he has worked hard to show his qualities since.

It should not be forgotten the success he had over 11 years at Everton, regularly challenging the conventional top four of the time on a shoestring budget.

Whilst the 61-year-old may not be considered the most glamorous appointment, he has a history of improving sides and, ultimately, getting results.

With Leicester expected to have limited funds to spend this summer, Moyes’ experience of getting the maximum out of the resources he has available should make him an attractive option for the Leicester hierarchy.

Whether Moyes would jump straight back into management after leaving West Ham is a question only he knows the answer to.

However, the former Real Sociedad manager has never stayed out of the game long and the opportunity to take over a club where he can utilise his strengths could tempt the Scot.

It would represent a drastic change in philosophies from Maresca, who is very much from the same school of thought as Pep Guardiola, but Moyes could instil the resilience needed to grind out results in the top flight.

Moyes brought Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to England in his time in charge of Everton and the Gunners’ manager could not speak highly enough on the influence Moyes had on him.

Speaking in 2023, Arteta said of Moyes: “It’s more than respect, it’s admiration, I loved playing for him,”

“I would go through a brick wall for him when he was my manager. I think everybody would in that squad.

“[He is] exceptional at managing the group and dealing with individuals, and a very special person, a really special human being.”

Going from big fish in a relatively small pond in the Championship to the Premier League where the majority of sides will boast superior players, a manager ‘exceptional at managing the group’ is exactly what Leicester will need.

If Leicester are not considering Moyes as Maresca’s replacement then they most certainly should be.
