O'Neil could make his first transfer mistake amid Wolves interest in 'pretty poor' PL flop - opinion

Gary O’Neil could make his first mistake at Wolves in the transfer window, as the club have been linked to a former Premier League flop.

Wolves will be hopeful of orchestrating a busy period in the transfer window, as Gary O’Neil requires a host of reinforcements.

The Old Gold navigated their way through the 2023/24 season with a squad agonisingly short on depth, with the summer now giving the manager the chance to replenish.

While new faces will be required, O’Neil must not make the same transfer mistakes that have been seen in the past at Molineux, with one rumoured target causing alarm bells to ring.

Wolves make Michy Batshuayi a transfer target this summer

Ahead of the upcoming transfer window, Wolves have been linked to Fenerbahce striker Michy Batshuayi, according to Turkish outlet Takvim.

The Old Gold have been linked to the former Chelsea striker in the past, with news resurfacing as he nears the end of his contract in Istanbul.

While Takvim details that the Belgian could yet extend his deal at Fenerbahce, Wolves are named as one of the interested parties circling the 30-year-old.

O’Neil is desperate to sign a forward this summer although, given the mistakes that Wolves have made in hiring in that position in the past, the club should think twice about Batshuayi.

Batshuayi would be a disappointing signing for Wolves

The Belgian has scored an impressive 44 goals in 75 appearances for Fenerbahce, as per Transfermarkt, although, his scoring record in England must be the focal point.

Having represented Chelsea and Crystal Palace in England, Batshuayi has failed to replicate his scoring form in Turkey in the English top flight.

In a total of 77 appearances in the Premier League, the 30-year-old has found the net just 15 times, with his highest scoring league season being five goals.

Speaking to Sky Sports about Batshuayi’s time at Chelsea, Blues legend Ray Wilkins described the forward as being ‘pretty poor’.

Wilkins admitted that he didn’t see the Belgium international as a suitable second-choice striker for Chelsea, telling of his lack of impact in the Premier League.

Now 30, it would be very underwhelming for the Old Gold to dive in for a player with such a reputation in England, particularly when Wolves’ transfer priority is to hire a goalscorer.

There is no doubt that Batshuayi is a capable forward however, the evidence is there to prove that the rumoured target is not at the level required to succeed in the Premier League.
