O’Neil could repeat Joao Gomes transfer masterclass as Wolves eye ‘dangerous’ £21m target - opinion

Gary O’Neil could make his Wolves transfer wish come true if the club takes inspiration from the 2023 signing of Joao Gomes.

Wolves are on the hunt for new faces in the upcoming transfer window, with several targets already identified.

Gary O’Neil is close to completing his first summer signing as Rodrigo Gomes has a medical with Wolves planned.

The Midlands club will be joyed to have captured the 20-year-old although, more forwards are said to be on the manager’s radar.

Wolves are interested in former transfer target Yuri Alberto

The January transfer window was as testing as the 2023 summer window for Wolves, as O’Neil failed to bring in the striker he wanted so dearly.

One of the forwards the Old Gold targeted was Yuri Alberto, whom Corinthians rejected a deal for on deadline day.

Now, it has been suggested that Wolves could revisit their interest in Alberto, with the stumbling block of additional fees now resolved.

Last summer, Brazilian outlet UOL claimed that an asking price of €25m (£21m) was wanted when West Ham attempted to capture the striker.

A similar price could be expected this summer, with a deal certainly there for Wolves to explore.

Gary O’Neil could replicate Joao Gomes masterclass with Alberto signing

The last time Wolves delved into the Brazilian market, the club struck gold in signing Joao Gomes from Flamengo for just £15m.

Now, O’Neil could be inspired by the success of such capture to further explore the possibility of striking a deal for Alberto.

The manager wants a number nine, and the Brazilian could be the figure to answer his wishes, being described as a ‘strong typical number nine’ by South American football expert Nathan Joyes.

Still only 23 years old, Alberto already has 79 senior domestic goals to his name in his career, via Transfermarkt, reinforcing how potent an addition he could be to O’Neil’s side.

When assessing the forward in 2021, talent scout Jacek Kulig described the Wolves target as having a ‘killer instinct’ and being an ‘extremely dangerous’ asset.

Links to Alberto have resurfaced at an interesting time as the transfer window fast approaches, with O’Neil still on the hunt for a reliable source of goals at Molineux.

Given that Wolves have been linked to Alberto before, and have found success in recruiting from Brazil, perhaps this summer could be the time to see the 23-year-old in the Premier League.
