'There wasn't...': Journalist explains the one thing that Xisco Munoz lacked at Sheffield Wednesday

Xisco Munoz endured a horror tenure with Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday were gearing up for their return to the Championship this time last year, before the sudden exit of Darren Moore as manager.

That kick-started a chain of events that led Sheffield Wednesday into a rather perilous 2023/24 campaign.

Former Watford boss Xisco Munoz came in as a fairly underwhelming appointment and would eventually leave the club without a win.

Munoz left in October 2023 after just four months in charge; his record was 12 games, no wins, and four draws, and Munoz is now managing DAC Streda in Slovakia.

Danny Rohl would replace Munoz and steer the Owls to a 20th place finish that was previously unthinkable.

Now, Sheffield Wednesday look set for a positive summer of change and a much brighter campaign in the Championship with Rohl at the helm.

What Xisco Munoz lacked at Sheffield Wednesday

Giving his verdict on Munoz in ‘Sheffield Wednesday: The Great Escape’ on Shots!TV, journalist Joe Crann explained what Munoz was missing during his tenure at Hillsborough.

Crann explained: “It didn’t really look like they had a much of a plan. I remember watching Danny’s first game at Watford and you saw immediately what they were trying to do, they way they were trying to work, the sort of football they were trying to play.

“But it felt, during the Xisco period, whether that was down to struggling with communication, whether it was not being able to get the best out of the players, or the players maybe not buying into it as much as they could’ve or should’ve done, but it just felt like there wasn’t much there in terms of how they wanted to play.

“You’d go into games, and you’d finish 90 minutes and you’d think, ‘I’m not really sure what they were trying to do’, and it would differ by games as well. You couldn’t really see any trends.”

Danny Rohl needs to maintain one thing at Sheffield Wednesday

There’s an endless list of compliments to pay Rohl following his impressive Sheffield Wednesday showing last season.

He’s charismatic in interviews and appears to be a very good man manager, as well as a very good tactician despite his young age.

But like Crann suggests, it’s the playing style that made him stand out. He completely transformed Sheffield Wednesday and the way they were playing, doing so in such a short space of time as well.

The Owls became a very front-foot and exciting side, and that kind of style and the eagerness to stick with it is something that Rohl needs to maintain going forward at the club.

There were times last season when many thought Rohl should line up different or set up in a different way, most notably after the 6-0 defeat at Ipswich Town in which Sheffield Wednesday were way too attacking.

But he stuck by his beliefs and eventually got Sheffield Wednesday over the line. Rohl needs to keep on trusting in himself going forward, and if he does then the Owls should prevail once again next season.
