Outrage as King Charles' new portrait vandalized - 'Disgusting'

Animal rights activists have vandalized King Charles’ new portrait by giving it a Wallace And Gromit-themed makeover, attracting fury.

The first official portrait of Charles as King was unveiled in May 2024 after he was crowned in September of the previous year. Painted by celebrated artist Jonathan Yeo, the portrait was initially unveiled at Buckingham Palace where it was hotly debated by not just the British public but people around the world—some loved it, and others despised it in equal measure. After its unveiling, it was put on display at the Philip Mould Gallery in central London, where it remained undisturbed until now…

Animal rights activists vandalize King Charles’ new portrait with unlikely face

The 8ft by 6ft portrait of King Charles was vandalized by two animal rights activists on Tuesday, June 11th 2024.

A video shows them pasting over his face with a picture of the classic Aardman character Wallace from the British stop-motion comedy franchise Wallace And Gromit. They also pasted a speech bubble below his mouth that reads: “No cheese Gromit. Look at all this cruelty on RSPCA farms.”

The British animal activist movement Animal Rising has claimed two of its followers orchestrated the stunt, addressing the reason for the Wallace And Gromit makeover stemmed from Charles’ love for the animated character. Charles is also a royal patron of the RSPCA, Sky News reports.

Posting on their official website, Animal Rising’s Daniel Juniper—one of the two who carried out the stunt—issued a statement: “Even though we hope this is amusing to his Majesty, we also call on him to seriously reconsider if he wants to be associated with the awful suffering across farms being endorsed by the RSPCA.”

Continuing his point, Daniel wrote that “Charles has made it clear he is sensitive to the suffering of animals in UK farms; now is the perfect time for him to step up and call on the RSPCA to drop the assured scheme and tell the truth about animal farming.”

Outraged public call the vandalization of King Charles’ portrait ‘disgraceful’

Although many actively involved in animal rights activism have expressed their support for the movement’s actions, others have slammed the vandalization of the portrait.

“Disgraceful and disgusting,” one reacted in outrage. “You should all be locked up!”

“This makes you disliked,” somebody also started arguing. “It damages your point rather than makes it. You have a great cause that deserves all the support. Please choose better tactics!”

Angrily, another replied: “The animals will surely sleep better tonight knowing you redecorated a piece of art. Pathetic excuse for an animal rights organization.”

Dismissing the stunt entirely, one commented “The lawlessness in this country is maddening.”

Some have been saying they deserve jail time: “A year in prison will have them sorted.” Further updates are likely to follow.
