'Credit to himself': Journalist thinks Sheffield Wednesday have just let go of a 'fantastically good' player

Sheffield Wednesday appear to be getting some transfer business completed early doors.

Sheffield Wednesday‘s survival kickstarted their transfer activity, while they begun talks with a number of their out-of-contract players.

A month on, Danny Rohl, Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan have signed new deals, while Josh Windass is thought to be nearing a contract extension too.

Recent reports have also claimed they are closing in on their first signings, with Ben Hamer, Max Lowe and Yan Valery all linked with a move to Yorkshire.

Wednesday have also let go of a number of players as they look to overhaul the relegation-threatened squad, with the likes of George Byers and Lee Gregory leaving on a free transfer.

While most things have gone to plan for Rohl so far, fans were left disappointed when they were unable to keep hold of one of their key players from the past two seasons.

It was confirmed yesterday that Will Vaulks had joined newly-promoted Oxford United after rejecting a new deal at Hillsborough.

Following his move, the midfielder said: “There’s a structure in place and it feels like a club that wants to go in the right direction and hopefully we are on the journey upwards… What you will get from me is that I can look anyone in the eye and say I will give the club everything. I will work harder than anyone on the pitch and give my all.

“I hope you see a player that has a bit of everything and likes to get in amongst it and let the forward players cause problems. From a fan’s perspective you will see someone who gives everything every week and I can’t wait to get started.”

Sheffield Wednesday have lost a ‘fantastically good bloke’

Vaulks certainly isn’t blowing his own trumpet either, with The Star journalist Joe Crann also keen to heap praise on the ‘tremendously determined’ player.

Following his exit, Crann wrote on X: “Oxford United are getting a tremendously committed footballer, who has played a huge role in #SWFC’s promotion and survival in the last couple of seasons. On top of that they’re getting a fantastically good bloke, who is a credit to himself and whoever he plays for.”

Would Will Vaulks have played a key role next season?

Many Wednesday fans were left gutted when it was rumoured that Vaulks had turned down a new deal at the club, having made 80 appearances over the last two seasons.

The 30-year-old was vital in the Owls’ relegation scrap and would have been a huge asset next term too – though that could well have been from the bench.

Vaulks became a fan favourite at Hillsborough, but with the direction the club were aiming to go in, Rohl was likely to target new midfielders that were of higher quality than him.

Vaulks’ departure does leave Barry Bannan as their only senior central midfielder though, so Wednesday need to act fast if they are to bolster that position before all their targets go elsewhere.
