Manchester United join Tottenham in race for £50m striker transfer after Erik ten Hag decision

Tottenham look set to battle it out with Premier League rivals Manchester United when it comes to the transfer market this summer.

Both clubs are looking to bolster their ranks after a campaign of twists and turns that ultimately qualify them for the Europa League.

It means both Spurs and United could be shopping in the same player market when it comes to shaping up the squad.

Ange Postecoglou will be looking at quality and quantity for his team, with the Tottenham boss suffering from a mixture of injuries and few replacements that suit the style.

A striker appears to be on the list of possible options, with Heung-Min Son and Richarlison sharing centre-forward duties last season.

However, that is certainly a market Man United are in, with more clarity over the club’s future as Sky Sports reports that manager Erik ten Hag is set to stay in his role with a possible new contract offer, following uncertainty over his position.

With that taken care of, United will quickly turn to transfer options and may join Spurs in the race for one star in particular.

Manchester United join Tottenham in transfer chase for Ivan Toney

With the stage set for an intense summer transfer window, one player who has been on Tottenham’s radar is Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

The forward is entering his final year under contract with The Bees, increasing the chances of them cashing in on a move.

That has also attracted interest from other clubs, with ESPN reporting that Man United are also in the race for the 28-year-old, who is on a shortlist of striker options for them this summer.

The report adds that Brentford will ask for more than £50million to let the England international leave in the coming weeks.

Toney has scored 36 Premier League goals in three seasons in the division – though last campaign he only bagged four due to a suspension from FA gambling charges.

Before that though, his scoring record had been impressive, while his all-around hold-up play was also allowing his teammates to thrive.

Ivan Toney on transfer future

Amid that transfer interest from Tottenham and Man United, Toney has already hinted towards his own thoughts on his future.

Speaking to Sky Sports in March, he jokingly told Sky Sports: “If Brentford was to sell me, they make their money, I move to Madrid and it’s all good.”

While a move to a Madrid club seems unlikely, it may certainly suggest that a transfer is on the mind of the striker this summer.

It remains to be seen whether either Spurs or United make their move, especially with Euro 2024 likely to impact any early discussions over his future.
