Sheffield Wednesday target has already explained why he'll love playing for Danny Rohl - opinion

A Sheffield Wednesday transfer target may have already explained why he’ll love playing under Danny Rohl.

Sheffield Wednesday appear to be honing in on their first signing of the 2024 summer transfer window, and we could see a few arriving in quick succession.

The Owls have several names on their radar and continue to be linked with new names ahead of what promises, and needs to be, a busy pre-season.

Danny Rohl is tasked with rebuilding the first-team squad after years of poor transfer planning. He also has to ensure that the Owls have the depth and quality needed to avoid a repeat of last season.

That may be easier said than done with names like Di’Shon Bernard likely to be moving on this summer, and with Sheffield Wednesday likely facing stern competition for some of their transfer targets.

The latter is already the case with names like Ike Ugbo, Ian Poveda, and Yan Valery; all of whom are wanted at Hillsborough for next season, but all have interest from elsewhere.

Max Lowe is the latest name to be linked with Sheffield Wednesday; he’s set to leave Sheffield United as a free agent and is said to be in advanced talks over a move to S6.

Sheffield Wednesday target Max Lowe explains what type of manager he prefers

Lowe, 27, has endured a tough four-year period at Sheffield United, with injuries limiting him to just 51 first-team appearances for the Blades.

But in that time, left-back Lowe recorded nine assists and one goal. He’s also spent time out on loan with the likes of Nottingham Forest where he grabbed four assists in 23 appearances.

Lowe is clearly a full-back who likes to get forward and create. He’s also one who prefers playing for a very straight-talking manager.

Speaking in 2022 after making his comeback in the Sheffield United XI under Paul Heckingbottom, Lowe explained how he likes working under a more ‘honest’ boss.

He said: “I would always rather play for a manager that’s up front and honest because you know what you’re going to get from him and he knows what he’s going to get from me.”

Lowe’s comments then might make him ideal for Rohl, and vice-versa, with Rohl very much a straight-shooter.

Danny Rohl is perfect for Sheffield Wednesday target Max Lowe

Rohl comes across as being very calm and understanding in his press conferences. But any good manager, which Rohl is so far proving to be, needs a ruthless streak.

We saw several players fall by the wayside under Rohl last season; Reece James, Jeff Hendrick, and Lee Gregory to name a few.

Rohl often spoke about how he’d had some honest conversations with players behind the scenes and the fact that no players (at least publicly) kicked up a fuss, tells us that Rohl went about those difficult matters in the right way.

It seems clear that Rohl is not only a good tactician but a good man manager as well. And that latter trait could make him the ideal manager for Lowe who says himself that he prefers an honest and up-front manager.

If Lowe can find some kind of consistency in terms of fitness at Sheffield Wednesday, he could become yet another player who really finds his footing under the guidance of Rohl.
