'Talks ongoing': Fabrizio Romano confirms Leicester City 'contact' with 'serious' managerial candidate

Leicester City are determined to secure their lead managerial target ahead of their return to the Premier league.

Having won the Championship title, Leicester City‘s summer preparations were thrown into disarray as manager Enzo Maresca left the club to take the vacant Chelsea job.

Not only do Leicester have the financial constraints associated with Premier League profit and sustainability regulations (PSR), they now have to try and fill their own managerial vacancy with a coach capable of keeping them in the top flight.

With over a week having passed since Maresca’s departure was confirmed the search has been extensive, with names such as Carlos Corberan, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Steve Cooper and even Ruud van Nistelrooy all mentioned.

However, the club appear to have settled on Graham Potter as their lead candidate and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on the situation.

Fabrizio Romano confirms Leicester City have approached Graham Potter

Potter has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea after less than a season in charge in April of last year.

The 49-year-old coach built his reputation through spells at Swedish club Osterstunds, Swansea City and Brighton before becoming the first manager to be appointed by Todd Boehly at Chelsea.

It did not work out, with Potter struggling to get the best out of an overinflated squad; a problem that Maresca is set to learn all about.

Now, it seems Leicester have taken action to get their man as Romano posted on ‘X’: ‘Leicester City have made contact with Graham Potter as serious candidate to replace Enzo Maresca.

Talks ongoing to make decision on the favourite option but Potter’s appreciated, waiting for club to decide.’

Of the candidates mentioned in association with the Leicester job, Potter is perhaps the most exciting.

His short spell at Chelsea should not lead to fans forgetting he was widely tipped as the most exciting English coach prior to his Stamford Bridge nightmare.

One spanner in the works could be that Potter is thought to be very keen on becoming England manager and uncertainty surrounding Gareth Southgate’s future beyond this summer’s European Championships could mean he looks to wait and see what happens.

However, Leicester do not have time to wait as they gear up for their return to the Premier League and will have to use the talks revealed by Romano to convince Potter this is the right project for him to make his return.

His tactical nous, combined with his ability to get the best out of individuals, could well be the difference between survival and relegation and the impact that would have on the club both from a footballing perspective and financially cannot be overstated.
