Report: Enzo Maresca admires 'fantastic' player Mauricio Pochettino wanted Chelsea to sign

Chelsea are currently linked with trying to sign a player this summer that Mauricio Pochettino previously wanted to bring to Stamford Bridge.

Mauricio Pochettino left Chelsea this summer by mutual consent after just one season in charge as the club’s head coach.

Enzo Maresca has since been named the successor in the Blues dugout, with the Italian officially starting his reign as head coach on 1 July.

It turns out the past and present Chelsea bosses like the same transfer target.

Enzo Maresca admires Chelsea target

TalkSPORT has claimed that Chelsea manager Maresca is an admirer of Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran.

It is explained that Pochettino previously wanted to sign the 20-year-old Villa forward, too.

The youngster is currently hotly tipped with a potential move to Stamford Bridge.

TalkSPORT’s report says that Chelsea are in discussions with Villa over £25m transfer swoop for Duran. In fact, his manager Unai Emery is prepared to sell the Colombian international in this upcoming window.

There’s some conflicting rumours in the media that suggest the Blues have already agreed a deal to sign the Premier League forward.

Journalist Guillermo Arango claimed via X that Chelsea have reached an agreement with Villa to sign Duran for around €50m (£42m).

Would Jhon Duran be a good signing?

Unfortunately, The Chelsea Chronicle will be bitterly disappointed if Duran ends up as the club’s only signing for the striker position.

At the age of 20, the South American frontman is still incredibly raw and at the infancy of his football journey. He’s scored eight goals in 49 first-team appearances for Villa.

What Chelsea need right now is a more experienced player to compete with Nicolas Jackson in attack.

We would be much more accepting of the Duran signing if he costs £25m rather than £42m, though.

Wilberth Perea, who coached Duran at U-15 level, has told Sky Sports how much potential the Villa youngster has.

Perea said: “He (Duran) actually started out as a winger, but I saw fantastic physical qualities in hieigm. He was strong, fast, very, very good in the air with a good shot.”
