'I've been told': Luke Edwards shares what he has heard about Ferran Torres to Newcastle rumours

Newcastle United fans have been met with a very strange story concerning Ferran Torres.

The Magpies are looking to sign a new right winger this summer, as Eddie Howe eyes up a player who can help take Newcastle United to the next level.

Some of the players linked could certainly do that, although there are fears that targets such as Jarrod Bowen and Michael Olise will be too expensive.

Now a new name has been linked with a move to St James’ Park in Barcelona’s Ferran Torres.

Newcastle linked with signing Ferran Torres from Barcelona

It has been reported by Jijantes in Spain that Newcastle United have made an offer for Torres worth an initial £12.6million. They add that the bid also includes £4million worth of add-ons, giving a grand total of £16.6million.

That seems a staggeringly low amount for a player of Torres’ calibre. This comes two and a half years after he joined Barcelona for an initial £46million from Manchester City.

Given the fee that has been reported, this story immediately felt dubious.

And that feeling has proven to be correct following an update from the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

Edwards, who covers Newcastle United for the Telegraph, has provided an update on the Torres situation, informing Toon fans that it is not really a situation at all.

He wrote on X: “I’ve been told there is no truth in claims Newcastle have made a bid for Ferran Torres.”

Newcastle have been linked with Torres before

While claims of a Newcastle bid for Torres are seemingly wide of the mark, this is not the first time that the 24-year-old has been linked with a move to St James’ Park.

There was some speculation surrounding him being a target last summer, before Harvey Barnes arrived as Allan Saint-Maximin’s replacement. Even the rumours last year seemed odd, and it eventually came out that Barcelona were desperate to sell him. And what happens in the European media when a club wants to sell a player? They get linked with Newcastle United and the wealth of PIF!

But even before PIF got the keys to St James’ Park, there were rumours of Torres coming to Tyneside. The Spain international was named as someone who the owners had wanted to buy in 2020, back when the takeover was initially meant to go through.

Torres was at Valencia at the time, but signed for Manchester City that summer as Newcastle braced themselves for another year under Mike Ashley’s ownership.

Not the first strange claim from Spain regarding Newcastle this summer

Claims in Spain of a Newcastle bid for Torres are wide of the mark, which does not come as a surprise.

Interestingly, this is actually the second time this summer that a seemingly false bid has been reported by the Spanish media.

It was a similar story regarding Giorgi Mamardashvili – the Valencia goalkeeper who Newcastle have been interested in signing.

There were reports of a £35million bid for the 23-year-old, only for it to eventually emerge that the Magpies thought he was too expensive. There was no £35million offer, and now Newcastle are bidding for James Trafford instead.

Even last year there were claims that Gabri Veiga was close to signing for Eddie Howe’s side, but that obviously did not happen.
