‘Outsider’: Chelsea tipped to show interest in signing £68m defender this summer

Former player Jan Aage Fjortoft has predicted that Chelsea will show interest in signing on defender this summer.

Defence is definitely a position the club were needing to strengthen, and already it has undergone massive change this summer.

Thiago Silva, who impressed more than many expected at this stage of his career, said his emotional goodbyes at the end of last sesson, with him now set to continue his playing days in Brazil.

In an attempt to begin to address this, the Blues acted swiftly in order to secure the free signing of Tosin Adarabioyo ahead of their rivals.

It is easy to believe they are not done there though, especially when taking into account some of the quality that could be available in this window.

Chelsea tipped to try and sign Matthijs de Ligt

One player who is being linked with an exit is Matthijs de Ligt, who has previously been reported to be of interest to those at Stamford Bridge.

It has previously been claimed that the Dutchman would be available for a fee around £68m.

Fjortoft has claimed on Twitter that while he believes fellow Premier League side Manchester United are favourites for the deal, he is refusing to count Chelsea out of the race

He said: “Re: de Ligt. If Bayern get the right price he is on his way:

“After ten Hag staying and Manchester United looking for a centre half, I will think they could be favourites to get the Dutch player.’….Chelsea being the outsider.”

Chelsea may be in the market for yet another defender after reports that they are open to Trevoh Chalobah leaving for the right price this summer.

This is despite the England international playing a key role when he was fit at the end of last season under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, it has been reported some at the club have doubts that he will be able to play the style of football new manager Enzo Maresca is looking to implement in West London.
