‘Really weird’: Journalist expected Aston Villa to sell ‘magic’ player instead of Douglas Luiz

Aston Villa headed into this summer transfer window with plenty of work to do.

Due to Profit and Sustainability regulations, Villa needed to raise a bit of cash this summer in order to balance the books.

By the looks of things, Douglas Luiz will be leaving to join Juventus in a part-exchange deal, and that is a strange move.

Indeed, Luiz’s sale isn’t raising much cash as a lot of the cost his offset by the two players who will be coming to Villa as a part of this deal – Samuel Iling-Junior and Weston McKennie.

Speaking on the Ranks FC Ultras Podcast, Dean Jones has been discussing Luiz’s impending departure, and he says that he’s surprised by this move, claiming that he expected Jacob Ramsey to be the big departure this summer if they were looking to generate cash.

Jacob Ramsey was supposed to be the one to leave

Jones shared what he knows about Aston Villa’s plans heading into the summer and the ‘magic’ midfielder.

“It’s really weird all of this. I can’t say I’m overly surprised that there will be a big sale at Aston Villa this summer. I thought it would be Jacob Ramsey, that was one of the aims of this window if they were looking to generate cash,” Jones said.

Strange move

As Jones says, this is a weird move.

Villa need to raise some cash this summer, so selling Luiz in a part-exchange deal doesn’t make that much sense as it doesn’t help them balance the books.

Yes, there is some cash attached to this deal, but in terms of accountancy, you’re selling a player who is worth a fortune for a minimal cash gain.

Of course, those behind the scenes at Villa who have access to the books will know better than any of us what needs to be done this summer, but, from the outside looking in, this does look to be a weird move.
